Canadian journalists view
Fallex exercises
• • e e
"tr Canadian soldiers are considered tops in
NATO says Brigadier -General Richard J.
Evraire, commander of 4 Canadian
Mechanized Brigade Group in Lahr, West
Germany.
"These troops are well-trained, happy,
have amazing esprit -de -corps and are ob-
viously proud of their involvement," adds
Jocelyn Shrier, vice-president of the News -
Record following a recent visit to Canadian
Forces Europe headquarters. Mrs. Shrier
was part of a contingent of six Canadian
comm, . ity journalists invited by the
Department of National Defence to view the
annual Fallex exercises near the Com-
munist border.
While in the field to watch the manoeuvres
the group had many opportunities to visit
with the Canadian troops. Among them was
Sgt. Ken Vivian who now calls Calgary
home, but who lived in the Hensall area for
several years prior to joining the forces. His
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Keith Vivian of
Londesboro.
Vivian is on his third tour in Lahr and is a
20 -year veteran of the Canadian Force' Ile
is currently attached to A Squadron, Royal
Canadian Dragons (Armored Division) and
is commander of a Leopard tank.
He is typical of Canadian troops in Ger-
many — proud of his job, his team and his
tank. He likes being stationed in Germany
and the opportunities for training and travel
it provides.
The brigade group to which Vivian is at-
tached (4CMGB) is 3,300 strong and forms
the land operational elements of Canadian
Forces Europe. It is prepared to carry out a
number of roles which can best be described
as counter -penetration, counter-attack and
rear area security.
• While Mrs. Shrier found the morale of the
troops extremely high, she commented that
they take their jobs very seriously. "To
them, war is a very real thing and they train
diligently to maintain a constant state of
readiness. 'They were an impressive lot; I
felt very proud," she added.
For a more detailed account of Mrs.
Shrier's experiences in Germany, read the
Oct. 4 edition of Focus.
