In brief, the 1983 season should show little change over last season. Sure there will be overtime for the fans to enjoy but team for team, nothing earth shattering should materialize in the regular standings. The New York Islanders are my candidate to win the Stanley Cup this season. They have virtually the same roster as last year and in my opinion, no other team's lineup has improved signicantly enough to knock them off. My season record is now 30-18. All fans that were laughing at halftime when•the Cords were up by 14 after Rod's Report had predicted Toronto by 15 - can eat your crow now! It .was the Arrrgos by 13. ( OK, I'll admit I was worried at the half! ) Could second place be a realistic spot for the Ottawa Rough Riders to finish? Apparently so! The Riders late season surge continues. As predicted the Ticats dug themselves into a deeper hole, while the Bombers continued their roll. Despite the fact the Ticats gave Bomber QB Tom Clements a broken clavical for old time's sake, Win- .,nipeg still prevailed. Maybe Defter Brock's early season hold out put some rust on his throwing arm! Tough luck Tabbies. Ottawa at Calgary Calgary is due for a win. If they don't beat Ottawa, the Stamps could find themselves struggling for a playoff position in the tight western division. Ottawa has come from behind two weeks in a row but how much longer can they keep that up? Stamps by 10 Edmonton at Toronto This game will decide who is actually going to make it when the chips are down. This game means more to the Eskies, who are fearing for their lives in the wild west. Will they burn down BARNES?? Eskies by seven Montreal at Saskatchewan The battle for the worst team in the CFL honors. Toss a coin. Your guess is as good as mine! Roughies by seven B.C. at Winnipeg Defense will win this game and this gives the Lions the advantage. Many expect this contest to be close but I doubt it. The pride of the west is still the B.C. Lions. ATTENTION CINTON MINOR HOCKEY SKATE®A® TII©j Clinton Arena Solurday Oelober 81h, 1983 from Sam-12r8Opm Pledge Shy available from© Ross Jewift or Jane Ladd t By Rod Hilts "Give us a couple of months and we should be in pretty good shape," were the words of new Clinton Mustang Head Coach Bob Zimmer following his club's 5-3 exhibition loss to the Port Elgin Bears last Sunday night. Zimmer took a line-up that included nine 16 year-olds into the Port Elgin game and despite the mismatch in size and ex- perience, Clinton made a good showing of themselves. One night earlier, the Mustangs were hammered 7-2 by the New Hamburg Hahns in a game that saw Clinton crumble in the final period as the Hahns scored four goals in the last seven minutes. On Sunday night, Port Elgin opened the scoring three minutes into the game on a powerplay. Don Matheson took a long pass from defenseman Jirn Binns and broke into the clear, beating goalie Pat Cronin with a deke to the stick -hand side. Poor checking led to the Bears' second goal as three Clinton players had a chance at knocking Grant Chevalier off the puck but instead elected to try a poke -check him. Chevalier dodged the checks and unleashed a 15 -foot wrist shot that beat Cronin low to the stick side. Port Elgin dominated the first period and showed why they were undefeated in the exhibition season. Twice in exhibition play, the Bears slammed last year's league champion Kincardine Kinucks. They also beat the Owen Sound Junior B's. Brent Daw got the Mustangs back into the game at the 11:38 mark of the second period on a powerplay. Daw took a pass from Kirkland Lake native Steve Cox and drilled a slapshot from the circle that whistled off the cross bar, under the arm of Kelvin Mundle. Both Cox and Mike Cale have joined the Mustangs from Kirkland Lake on a five-day tryout. The turning point in the game was a short- handed goal by Port Elgin's Bill Jacques. Jacques picked up a loose puck outside the Clinton blue line, outskated the defense, and snapped a shot to the stick -side of goalie Cronin. Less than three minutes later, Jacques scored again, this time on a bang -bang play with Doug Bartlett. Bartlett carried the puck along the boards into the Clinton end and fed a perfect pass to Jacques. Jacques quickly converted the pass between the legs of Terry Bean, who had taken over for Cronin midway through the second period. Clinton got one back on a powerplay when Scott Bailey unloaded a slapshot from close range that eluded the pads of goalie Mike Rourke. The third period saw Clinton close to within one goal of the Bears on a powerplay goal by Randy Marriage. Shawn Van Dongen initiated the play after his drive from the point was deflected by Grant Garrow and the rebound was put in by Marriage. Don Matheson put the Mustangs hopes of winning theame to rest, when he scored his second of the game at 14:29. Matheson turned on the jets, outmuscled the Clinton defense and slid the puck low to the corner past a sprawling Terry Bean. The Mustangs came close in the closing minutes of the game as they hit the goal post twice. Following the game Coach Zimmer emphasized the fact that his team is in the building process. `1Come dance with me" appears to be what this Port Elgin Bear player was gesturing toward Mustang Shawn Van Dongen in last Sunday's exhibition game played in Clinton. The Bears didn't do much dancing as they tamed the Mustangs 5-3.1 Rod Hilts photo) rocess "We're a little young and relatively inexperienced. It's going to take a while until we're ready," Zimmer said. Zimmer explained he will have to trirn his roster down about six or seven players this week in preparation for Clinton's season - opener on Oct. 7 in Kincardine. At present 27 players are trying out with the team and Zimmer hopes to sign 21 or 22. An encouraging sign out of the Clinton training camp this year is that out of the 17 new bodies trying. out for the Mustangs, 10 have played in the Clinton Minor Hockey system. The Mustangs first home game of the season is on Oct. 9 when Port Elgin comes to town for an 8 p.m. start. Snowmobile permits available TORONTO - The Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications an- nounced recently new, one-time snowmobile validation decals are now on sale. The effec- tive date for the new decals was October I. Under the new system, snowmobile owners will pay a one-time permit fee of $25.00 and that fee will be valid for the lifetime of the machine. On payment, the ministry will provide validation tags which are to be placed on the vehicle as follows: - for presently registered vehicles, the two validation tags are to be placed on either side of the cowling in the same location as previous tags. - for new vehicles registered after October I, MTC will issue two identical decals (approx- imately motorcycle plate -size) to be placed on either side of the cowling. The validation tags are to be placed in the upper right-hand corner of the decal, as on a regular licence plate. Snowmobile owners may validate their vehicles at any ministry or local motor vehi- cle licensing office. The new system will eliminate an annual fee and result in a more accurate up-to-date vehicle registration file.
