After three months of near draught conditions in Huron county the skies opened up in the past week and dumped up to seven inches of rain on most of the county, 'halting all harvest operation, and turning the site of the Inter- national Plowing Match into a muddy field. 10 years ago Septeitdber 20, 1973 About 950 students of Cen tral Huron Secondary Schoo in Clinton received some unexpected holidays thi week when the recent coli weather caught the school' heating system off guard. A new industry, Schult Manufacturing Compan Ltd. of Burlington, are loo} ing at Clinton as the possibl site of a new plant that coul employ at least 25 people i the next several months. 25 years ago September 18, 1958 As a result of crowding it Bayfield Public School (SS) Stanley) pupils from SS 8 Goderich Township and SS Stanley will not be permitted to attend here after October 15. A. H. Wilford, known as the rutabaga king, in this part of the province, and wider afield, is planning a meeting on Monday after- noon in the Doherty Warehouse, Blyth. As a director of the Ontario Rutabaga Marketing Ser- vice, Mr. Wilford is calling this meeting with rutabaga growers to review a report on the latest development on the marketing of rutabagas. 50 years ago September 21, 1933 Mr. J. J. McCaughty, who is the present owner, has had the old frame building Jehind Mr. H.C. Camerson's wood working shop pulled down and is building a smaller, neaterbuilding at the rear of the lot, which will be used for a store house. So far the chicken thieves who made such good hauls a little over a week ago have not been caught but the police are said to be working on a clue and it is hoped something will come of it. 75 years ago September 24, 1908 A petition is in circulation around Amberley and it will be presented to the Huron Council at its next meeting. It prays that an officer be ap- pointed to compel farmers to cut and destroy noxious weeds on their premises. Mr. Alex Henry is the mover in the matter. He argues that no farmer can keep his farm clean if his neighbours do not look after their farms and no man likes to interfere with his neighbour in this respect, but that a duly appointed of- ficer can see that the work is performed and there need be no ill feeling about it. Certain it is that noxious weeds are making too great headway in this district and unless checked they will choke the grain. 100 years ago September 19, 1883 One evening last week a nice spread was gotten up at Mr. H. Martin's hotel in Seaforth, the occasion being the departure for Buffalo of Mr. T. Greene. Genial Jos. Beck presided and speeches and songs were given by Messrs. R. Symonds, Geo. Evans, Jas. Wells, R. Sim- monds and others. The fishermen have all left for the fishing islands. Preparations are being made for our fall fair, which promises to be the best ever held in Bayfield. The prizes in the infant show will no doubt be well contested for we hear of a number of per- sons that intend showing their rosy cheeked babies. We understand that the Reeve has engaged his Deputy, we mean Bill, to assist in the distribution of the Globe pewter watches to subscribers to that journal; also this agent has engaged a tinker (we hear John Mack) to visit Bayfield once a month for the purpose of repairing the aforesaid Globe watches. They are all Lever watches, that is the poor victims can leave then) at the watchma kers every time they pass.
