U.C.W. ready for bazaar
The Blyth U.C.W. ladies
have completed their major
summer project, catering
for theatre luncheons and
dinners, and now have work
for their Nov. 12 bazaar well
under way.
One of the features again
this year is used clothing for
all ages. The church parlor
for the Nov. 12 afternoon will
become an attractive
display place for children's
used attire. The demand is
great.
A novel idea for the kind
and serving of refreshments
is certain to be popular.
The U.C.W. Thank offering
services will be held on the
night of Oct. 12, and the
Regional Presbytery
Meeting is in the North
Street Church, Goderich, on
Oct. 5.

Still in love after all these years, Mr. and Mrs. Patterson of Blyth celebrated their 60th
Wedding Anniversary last week. (Wendy Somerville photo).
By Wendy Somerville
They met at a ball game, at a time when
the old Maitland league was running in
Auburn. Francis Patterson was a great
ball player and Zella was proud of his 21
strikeouts in one game.
Francis courted Zella for about two
years and they eventually married in
Zella's Westfield home.
"We were married right in my living
room right in the corner," laughed Zella.
The only other member of the wedding
party was Francis' niece along with two
witnesses.
The couple had a double honeymoon with
Francis' sister and husband. The four went
to Toronto's C.N.E. and Niagara Falls.
"We went to Stouffville, that's when it
wasn't connected with Toronto," added
Francis.
"I had new shoes on and I had to walk
around in my stocking feet because my
feet hurt," remembered Zella.
Mr. and Mrs. Patterson settled on a
farm in East Wawanosh on the third line.
It was here that they brought up their
three children, Bill, Ken and Shirley, and
toiled the soil for 43 years.
They were married at a time when cars
were unheard of and the horse arid buggy
were the only means of transport from one
neighbor to another. They were together
, during a depression and a world war, yet
still they stuck together.
Bill Patterson said he could never
remember his parents raising their voices
towards one another.
According to Francis Patterson, "We
have always spent time talking things
over. There was never a real boss in the
marriage."
Seventeen years ago the Pattersons
moved to their present home in Blyth. The
house is a cosy bungalow filled with fur-
niture that once furnished a typical farm
house. Flowers and cards line the shelves
and tables, commemorating their 60th
wedding anniversary.
On the 5th of September Bill, Ken and
Shirley held an open house at the Blyth
United Church in honor of their parents'
anniversary. As many as 200 guests came
from all over to visit a couple who had
been married exactly 60 years to the day.
Cards and flowers are still arriving to-
day and Francis and Zella are proud of
their treasures. Eric Nielsen sent a con-
gratulatory message from parliament as
did David Peterson, leader of the opposi-
tion. John Aird, Canada's Lieutenant
Governor, sent a message that, "As
representative in Ontario of Her Majesty
the Queen, may I extend greetings and
congratulations to you." Cards and phone
calls from coast to coast leave Francis and
Zella Patterson with a feeling that their
marriage was and is definitely a happy
and successful union.
