Climatic conditions play a large role in the formation of deadly silo gas, and weather condi- tions over the last two mon- ths have caused some farm safety experts to issue warn- ings concerning the gas. Silo gas or nitrogen diox- ide is produced as a by- product of the fermentation process that takes place once plant material is put in- to a silo. A variety of climatic stress on the plant material during the growing season can dramatically in- crease the possibility of toxic gases forming. To avoid silo gas, farmers are advised not to harvest crops immediately after a rainfall. Conversely, crops damaged by hail or frost should be harvested as quickly as possible to avoid build-up of excess nitrate in the plant material. If weather or other factors have increased the possibili- ty of nitrate build-up, plant material should be cut higher than normal, as ex- cess nitrates are stored in the lower portion of corn stalks. Silo gas may be visible within a few hours after silo filling and may be recogniz- ed by a bleach -like odour and may be visible as a yellowish -brown haze. Dead flies or birds at the base of the silo may also be an in- dicator of the gas. Once a silo is filled, it should be sealed and declared off-limits for at least a three week period. During this period of time the silo should not be entered, unless all rules for confined space entry are closely followed and a self- contained breathing ap- paratus is used. Blind Club will host CNIB show The Bluewater Blind Club is sponsoring a CNIB display and demonstration of visual aids and appliances in the Wesley Willis United Church auditorium, Clinton on Tuesday, September 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. This display and demonstration will feature such itms as talking clocks, talking weigh scales, talking calculators, telescope len- ses, etc. Gwen Watson of Clinton, president of the Bluewater Club, says there are a lot of new items for blind people on the market since the club held its last display in 1978. Tea will be served to those attending and a silver collection will be taken up. This money will be sent overseas to help a group of blind people in India spon- sored by the Bluewater Club. Besides sponsoring this group, the Club also supplies talking books free of charge to blind persons in area nursing homes. But mainly it serves as a social organization open to the 108 blind persons in Huron County. "We play games, listen to music and have special guests speakers," explains Mrs. Watson. "But mostly we offer moral support to one another. Many people who are just losing their sight, are afraid to go anywhere and this gives them the opportunity to get out." The Club meets once a month and has between 18 and 20 members who attend with their escorts. Anyone with less than 10 per cent sight is welcome to join and may phone Mrs. Watson at 482-7406 for further in- formation.
