Morris and East Wawanosh fire costs go down
A new cost sharing
agreement between five
municipalities serviced by
the Wingham Fire Depar-
tment will see East
Wawanosh and Morris
Townships' share of the
funding reduced.
Members of the Wingham
and rural fire committees
persuaded Wingham Council
to endorse the new
agreement. The proposal
took some convincing, the
Wingham Advance Times
reported, since it
significantly raised the
town's contribution to the
fire department. However
're committee members
argued that the new
agreement was fair and that
at least some of the extra
share would be offset by
lower operating costs on the
new fire hall.
While Wingham's portion
of the funding will be raised
to 37.5 per cent of the total,
East Wawanosh will now
only pay seven per cent,
down from 18 per cent and
Morris Townships share will
be reduced to eight per cent
from 18. Turnberry's share
has dropped to 18 per cent
from 23, however Howick's
portion will rise to 29 per
cent from 17 in the old
agreement.
The new cost sharing
agreement is based on three
factors; assessment in the
municipality, portion of the
municipality served by the
Wingham department and
distance from the fire hall. It
assumes 100 per cent
protection for property
within five minutes
travelling time ( two and one
half miles) from the fire hall
and 75 per cent protection
from property outside this
radius.
Wingham and Turnberry
are the only municipalities in
the fire area to receive 100
per cent coverage from the
Wingham department. Half
of East Wawanosh is covered
by Blyth and more than half
of Morris is covered by Blyth
and Brussels departments,
making their shares in the
Wingham department much
lower than the others.
Howick's coverage falls
into a special category since
it will be covered by
Mr. and Mrs. Don McNeil of Blyth are pleased to

The wedding will take place on Saturday. September
17. 1983 at 5:30 p.m. in the Blyth (United Church.

Wingham through a satellite
hall with one truck and its
own crew. One small portion
of Howick will still relyon
neighboring Cliford
Township for fare protection.
East Wawanosh Reeve
Neil Vincent commented
that hopefully with the
proposed area board picking
up operating expenses for
the fire hall, which were
previously Wingham's
responsibility, the actual
dollar increase would not be
too great.
He noted that heating costs
alone must have been
exorbitant in the old hall
since heat escaped through
wide cracks in the walls.
Acceptance of the new cost
sharing formula removes
one of the last road blocks to
formation of a fire area
board. The board will
assume ownership and
operation of the fire
department and the satellite
station in Howick.
Turnberry barn
WINGHAM - An overloaded
electrical circuit is
suspected as the cause of a
fire which destroyed a large
barn on a Turnberry
Township farm on August 16.
The loss, which is
estimated at more than
$60,000, included about 140-
150 pigs and a large quantity
of hay stored in the barn as
well as in the yard behind it.
Some cattle, which also were
in the barn, were saved, as
were about 40 pigs.
Wingham fire fighters got
urns
the call to the Ray
Breckenridge farm on Lot 2,
Con. B, of Turnberry at
about 1:45 p.m., Chief Dave
Crothers reported. There
was no chance of saving the
barn, however, the firemen
did help to get some pigs out.
