Clinton News-Record, 1983-08-24, Page 12PAGE 12-CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 1983 Select your child's sh es c ref ily ack-to-school time means parents must plan children's clothing needs. Shoes are a major dein on the list. To ensure the development of healthy feet for your child, choose shoes that are comfortable with good fit and quality con- struction, says Marg Loewen, textiles specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food's rural organizations and services branch. From infancy through childhood and adolescence, bones in the feet are forming and changing. At birth, only the heel is the real bone. As feet develop, cartilage is replaced by bone and ligaments and muscles form. Proper shoes and foot care through childhood are imperative to prevent future foot problems. Children's feet grow very quickly. Up to age six a size change can occur every one to two months; from age six to ten a size change is possi- ble every two to three mon- ths. For this reason, parent should regularly check their child's feet and correct shoe size: Check the fit of new shoes with the child standing up. The shoe should be 1.2 cen- timetres to 1.9 centimetres (1/2 inch to 3/4 inches) longer than the child's foot. It should be wide enough for all of the toes to rest on the sole of the shoe and deep enough to avoid pinching. The shoe heel should fit snugly but not tightly. Quality construction is another consideration. Parents should buy the best quality shoes, that they can afford. When looking at the construction, carefully ex- amine both the inside and outside. Rough stitching or uneven edges may cause discomfort. Leather, rubber or plastic soles are suitable as long as they are durable yet flexible. Many different materials can be considered for the up- per part of the shoe, but leather is one of the most durable and pliable and porous, allowing for ventila- tion. The counter which Is the stiffening material plac- ed at the back of the heel, should have enough body so that it does not bend too easi- ly but enough recovery that it springs back into shape. There are many types of fasteners but laces have pro- ven to be the best selection for fit and comfort. Choose cotton laces which retain their shape and do not slip easily when tied. Hand-me-down shoes can cause foot damage. A child's foot may measure the same size as that of another child, yet the two have very different -shaped feet. Wear- ing hand-me-down shoes forces pliable feet to con- form to the foot shape already taken by the shoe. Individual fitting is necessary for every child's feet and it is false economy to pass down shoes from one child to another. Socks that are short or tight can also cause foot pro- blems. Socks should be 1.2 cm (½ in.) longer than the longest toe. If your child's feet grow faster than the socks wear out, buy stretch socks. The shoes and socks you choose for your child can en- courage the growth of healthy feet or can lead to life-long foot problems. Choose the best quality shoes you can afford while ensur- ing comfort with good fit and quality contruction.
