Hardest hit was an area from Varna to Brucefield where trees were down and the end blown out of a barn on the farm of the late Tom Blackie, scattering lumber in a bean field. There was also extensive damage to buildings and trees at the Wayne Taylor farm nearby. The Huron County Board of Education has decided to ban one of the three books used in high school classrooms. The Diviners by Margaret Laurence was banned by board members in a recorded vote. Two other books, Of Mice And Men and Catcher In The Rye, will remain on the list of ap- proved novels. 10 Years ago August 23, 1973 Nineteen new families who have moved into the, area in the last month were welcomed at a special church service at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Clinton last Sunday night. The families have found jobs in the area under the Operation Tran- splant program which was initiated by Clinton Baptist minister Dwight Strain. The other towns in the county report about the same so that Huron is doing at least its share in fur- nishing helpers in the har- ilesting. While Mr. J. Taylor was at Rayfield one day last week and was having his horse got ready for leaving, the stable cat made for his little black dog. The dog skiddoed, yelping, and the feline fastened so savagely on Mr. Taylo: s leg that it was with some difficulty knocked off. The animal's claws penetrated his clothing and drew blood and it was deemeA, advisable to have the cuts treated by a doctor which Mr. Taylor had done. WO years ago August 24, 1883 The Morris Township correspondent reports, "A number of farmers around here say they will have to buy their bread for the en- suing year on account of the scarcity of wheat, as in some instances the wheat crop is almost a total failure. Those who haveheir old wheat seem to be annoyed about it heating, and those who have none are equally vexed because they did not keep it over. They all seem to have given up politics and Methodist union, as their conversational topics and chaff, rust, heating add unfavorable weather are the chief subjects of discussion."
