Thriller -
Michael Jackson
"Wanna be starting
something, you pretty young
thing?""You're a vegetable-"
"Billy Jean, baby be
mine."
"Just beat it."
Well, thrill me onto the
dance floor, Jackson lovers.
It seems Michael is looking,
and has been doing so for a
while (rejections keep you
looking), for love. What bet-
ter way to search than with
the hottest, (sizzling, in
fact), albums of the decade
(it is the third best selling LP
in the world).
Thriller was put out in
1982, produced by Quincy
Jones. The first single was
The Girl is Mine. Sales
weren't very good. Then
came Billy Jean, sung by
Jackson so frantically that
the words were difficult to
discern. Thriller was a hit.
Then came Beat It, Wanna
Be Startin' Something and
Human Nature. The rest is
vinyl history.
It's no mistake that the
album is successful. All the
songs are alive with beat,;
Thriller is superbly
engineered.
Now, let's face that word
that makes us all afraid.
Disco. Disco was predicted
to return to the music scene
by the mid -'80's. Michael
Jackson (whom I want to
call Prince), were he to label
his music as such, would
lead the way.
Don't fret. If this is the
sound of dance music for
1983, I, and several 100,000
Thriller owners, welcome it
openly.
Rating: 10 out of 10.
Many thanks to BTR for
lending me Thriller.
The Fugitive -
Tony Banks
Tony Banks, keyboards
genius for Genesis, has
released his second album.
Overall, the Fugitive is a
light, reggae -tinted disc.
Some tracks would be dance
hits, given airplay. Such is
the case with This Is Love, a
song that echoes Phil Col-
lins' "if it feels good, do it",
`tyit,h "do what you want/be
what you want."
Unlike A Curious Feeling,
Tony's first album, where
vocals were done by Kim
Beacon, Tony does all the
singing. He is a strong
keyboards player, this
shown on Thirty -Threes and
Charm, which are worthy of
the classification
"classical", but his vocals
aren't that great. It is often
difficult to discern the words
over the music. This is disap-
pointing, because Tony often
has meanings tucked neatly
into the lyrics.
le
For those about to rock,
Moving Under is the song. In
this hit, a jester has been
getting dismal about the hec-
tic life at court. He's -always
on the run, a word play on
The Fugitive. And, you
know... we're all jesters in
our own way.
Cargo - Men at Work
Is there an Australian in-
vasion or what? We're just
getting used to AC/DC, Air
Supply, Olivia Newton John,
and Rick Springfield, when
more rock groups come out
from down under. The
newest group getting airplay
is Kajagoogoo ( Too Shy ), but
the most talked about is Men
at Work whose new album is
Cargo.
Cargo is the follow-up
album for their debut multi -
platinum Business as Usual.
The three singles that have
been released are Dr.
Heckyll and Mr. Jive,
Overkill, and It's a Mistake.
The music is not as in-
novative as the music from
Business as Usual, but this is
not because the band
members are amateurs. In-
deed, their drummer, Jerry
Speiser, has been beating the
bongos since age 12, John
Rees has a diverse
background in playing
piano, Colin Hoy and Ron
Strykert have a grounding in
jazz, and Greg Ham has
studied classical music.
Their professionalism car-
ries through to the album
sound, which is smooth flow-
inCargo is a fun album, full
of Australian allusions. It
deserves an 81/2 out of 10.
