My overall record now stands at 13-7. Not spectacular but not bad! This week in the CFL there shouldn't be too many upsets but in Canadian football one just never can be too sure. This week Rod's Report on Sports goes on record with the following predictions: Toronto at Ottawa The Argos looked sick in their loss to the Brock's Bombers. Unless Condredge Holloway can get the run - and -shoot out of the crawl -and- sputter, Ottawa could pull an upset. George Brancato is no doubt still kicking his players in the butt after last weeks loss to Hamilton. Toronto by seven Edmonton at Montreal A classic match -up pitting the Lion against a field mouse. Edmonton should ground the Concordes by a sizable margin. Eskies by 14 Winnipeg at B.C. It will be an all out aerial attack in Vancouver for this game. The Lions super -tough defense will have to come up big in this one. As long as Brock has an arm the Bombers will have an offense. B.C. by 10 Hamilton at Calgary Hamilton has come up with two consecutive wins and "can see the light at the end of the tunnel" in respect to first place in the east. This is a big game for both clubs. Ruoff's leg will be the difference in this one. Hamilton by six Team photos On the local sports scene, recently we have been asked about our policy on team sports pictures. As a general rule team pictures are discouraged, simply because it is next to impossible to give each and every team in our readership area equal coverage. Team championship pictures are also hard to obtain since they involve difficult scheduling. We have found it difficult to always be at the many championship games when a local team wins, or to gather members together for photo at a mutually convenient time. We realize that local teams winning tournaments are newsworthy items and encourage coaches to let us know such accomplishments. We do consider running quality team photos sent in by coaches from such tournaments. It's the time of year when many local teams are involved in tournament play and league cham- pionships, a great time to see first hand the top notch Lobaseball that is offered at all levels in this area. So get ut there and support your local team! Double Duty Use outdoor equipjne It to sleep more guests. By Rod HU There's something about London -Clinton con- frontations that always result in bizarre baseball games between the two Great Lakes league rivals. When all the dust had settled and the final pitch thrown, the Clinton -Fleming Colts strolled away with a dramatic 6-5 come -from - behind win over the London Juniors on August 12 in Clinton. The game marked the opening of a best -of -three playoff series. The Colts rebounded from a fifth inning three -run deficit and scored two runs in the ninth inning to take the victory out of the grasp of the London squad. Clinton's 15 hit attack was severely hampered as they stranded 14 men on base. The Colts' two best hitters this season, Don MacDonald and Dan Colquhoun came through in a pressure - packed ninth inning to lead their team to victory. Things started out looking dismal in the bottom of the ninth inning as Clinton had Ron Wells, the potential tying run on third, with two men out and Colquhoun at the plate, behind 1-2 in the count. Colquhoun responded to the pressure with a slicing single to centre field, deadlocking the game at five. Casey Wildgen followed with a walk and Don MacDonald kept the rally alive with a single to left field, loading the bases. That set the stage for Cal Fremlin. London pitcher Brian Collar, obviously Its " feeling the pressure from the surprisingly boisterous Clinton crowd, then walked Fremlin, bringing home Colquhoun for the winning run. Casey Wildgen turned in an admirable pitching performance for the Colts in going the distance. Wildgen gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out nine batters. London opened the scoring in the third inning as an error to shortstop Dave Bartliff proved costly, setting up two Junior runs. Craig Pettit led things off with a single to left field. Scott Simpson then reached base on the error to short. Richard Thompson sacrificed the runners up a base with a ground ball to second. A passed ball then scored Pettit giving London the lead. Rick Cartwright then smashed a double to centre to score Simpson. The Juniors upped their lead to three in the fourth when they took advantage of a free pass issued to Dave Blake. Blake stole the show in the inning as he displayed good base running abilities. He scampered down to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on a bloop single into shallow right field. Clinton hit the score sheet in the third inning as they capitalized on the wild arm of starting pitcher Scott Simpson. Don MacDonald led the inning off with a hot smash over the head of the third baseman for a single. Cal Fremlin and Butch Fleet al followed with walks. Clean- up batter Hans Leppington's bloop single to right field scored MacDonald. The Juniors got out of the inning when Fremlin attempted to score on Leppington's hit but was tagged out "cold turkey" at home plate. Dave Blake proved to be a thorn in the Colts' side again in the sixth, when he beat out a slow roller to shortstop. Rick Roberts followed with a fly ball that left fielder John Hart misjudged. Hart got a late jump on the ball and it tailed away from him, curving toward the third base line. An error to Dave Bartliff on Scott Stafford's grounder to short then allowed Blake to score. Colquhoun and Don MacDonald combined in the sixth inning to bring Clinton w y t even on the scoreboard. Colquhoun belted a single down the third base line to initiate the Clinton rally. Casey Wildgen followed with a walk to put Colquhoun in scoring position. "Mr. Versatility," Don MacDonald, then slapped a single up the middle that the centre fielder over -ran, allowing both Colquhoun and Wildgen to score. MacDonald, with his great speed, advanced to third on the play. One pitch later, Cal Fremlin knocked in the tying nm with another single up the middle. The Juniors crept back in front in the eighth inning when Dave Blake continued his assault on Clinton pit- ching with a stand-up double to deep centre field. Clinton pulled it off in the ninth on an infield single by John Hart, a successful bunt by Greg Burns and two clutch hits by Colquhoun and MacDonald. Brian Collar's control problems in the final innings allowed the Colts to "walk" away with game one of the series. London 12 Clinton 5 On August 14, the scene switched to London where Clinton's starting pitcher Mike Wildgen was battered for seven runs in the first inning. Clinton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their first at bat but five hits and three walks in London's half of the first proved costly, as the Juniors chased starter Mike Wildgen out of the game. Don MacDonald led off the game with a walk and was advanced into scoring position when John Hart hit a single. Colquhoun then doubled down the first baseline to score both run- ners. Butch Fleet came through with base hit ad- vancing Colquhoun to third. Colquhoun then scored on a sacrifice fly by Greg Burns giving Clinton a three run lead. London wasted no time in erasing Clinton's lead as they counted seven times to take an early command of the game. Clinton came back with one run in the fifth when MacDonald walked to lead off the inning. The Juniors collected three runs on five straight singles. A disputed call down the third baseline resulted in two of the runs in the seventh, causing a furious argument from the Colts' catcher Fleet and third baseman Fremlin. Both players said the ball in question was hit a foot foul. The Juniors collected two more in the ninth on a Colt error and a home run by Dave Blake. Fremlin had three hits to lead the Colts offensively. Fleet had a pair of singles.
