There is a very widespread belief
'that Nature seppiies a plant for the
.cure of every diseeee with Which she
afflicts the human ram. This may,
or May not, be tree, But it IA a fact
thet in our ordinary kitchen garden
vegetables and fruits we have valu-
able cures for a variety of ailments.
Celery, for instance, is an un-
doubted remedy for rheumatism, It
le a -sedative to the irritable brain,
and it ie an excellent preventive of
indigestion This is no mere theory.
'Celery has been. chemically analyzed,
and is shown to contain an abund-
ance of potash, which relieves rheu-
matism; of .phosphoric acid, which
tones the nervous system; and of
'warming substances, which are very

it is about ae indigestible as straw.

Radiebes 'have a similar purifying

much meat and little vegetable food
shows .some of the symptoms, in...the
forra of a sallow, dull complexion,
• spongy gums, and loose teeth. For
this state there is 110 better antidote
than plenty of radishes.
For this and similar complainte,
•10 lettuces, watercress, and endive aro
also very good remedies. Theyare
cooling and refreshing to the: body;
• and the salts which they contain are
specific. against infections diseases.
Of course, it is not everyone who
. can digest these raw vegetables, and
they should always be taken in
en.oderation: All vegetables indeed,

Asparagus is a well-knowa heart -
sedative -so much so that a medi-

and administered to people who have

heart is easily excited, could not de
better than prepare for the ordeal
by eating freely of asparagus. For
the speculative business man is i.s
also an invaluable food.
Lentils are very rich in iron; Male
salis, and phosphates. It is easy to
sec from their analysis whatanex-
cellent effect they have upon the
body. Iron makes the bleed red,
and the lime and the phosphates
build strong bones, and help tee keep
the teeth sound. Not only are len-
tils an ideal food for growing chil-
dren, but they cure anaemia, rickets
and carious teeth.
The carrot is a fine food for the

Bailey is a vegetable food of which
we eat far too little. It certainly
does not make as nice -looking bread
as wheat, but, as it contains abun-
dance of iron and phoeplioric acid,
it is an excellent food for the weak.
With regard to fruits, it is evident
from their composition that :they
can. take the place of Medicine in
many ailments. And they have one
• great advantage over medicines, in-
asmuch as they may be used .evory
day of the life without harmful con-
sequences.
All fruits are rich in pettish salts.
This means that they are good for
people predisposed to gouty and
rheumatic ailments. 'Apples and
Sfrawberriee contain a ittentity of
soda ; and soda is well known to
prevent, and even to nine,. influenza,.
The citric acid in grapes is most
cooling in all fevers, feverish colds,
' and other ailments, and it makes
the' blood pure. Grapes also.- con-
• tale a large quantity of eu,gar, and
are therefore nourishing.'
Oranges, lemons, and limes aro
powerful antiscorbutics. They •re-
move • poisonous matter from the
system; and keep the blood fresh an.d
pure. Oranges albite, without 'any
help from drugs, reduce fever, , and
soethe the nervous system. ..
• Peaches and nectarines are .highly
'immeshing; and, as they contain
very little sugar, they are good for
the diabetic.
Not only do fruits contain potash
• and soda -substances which are in -
•dispensable to the .blood -but - they
have largo quantities of iron, Brae
salts, and magnesia- Thus they help

Acids have a singularly good in-
fluence on health, aiding digestion,

tables Very little acid is. to be
'found. But -all fruits are abundantly
supplied with it. There is tartaric
acid in grapes, citric acid in lemons

HOW TIIE SYSTEM WORKS
SERIOUS OBJECTIONS 19 THE
MOBILE COLUMNS.
London Times? Correspondent
Criticises Systems Employed
in South Africa.
The specific criticisms made on the
systems ef .mobile • colturma. and
blockhouses; says • a. special 001TOS-
p9ndent of the London Times, are :
•A. British mobile column requires
transport, and transport requires in-
fantry to guard it. This at once re-
duces the mobility of a mobile col-
umn to • the mobility of infantry.
• Only whoa there is an energetic,
daring confinander, who will utilize
his mounted men away from the
transport, is there much capturing
of Boors. ,Further, a mobile colume
has guns, •When a party of the en-
emy is Iodated by the advance scouts

less. Veldt ensues, the Boers vanish,
and the column resumes its march.
Whett a *bile colhinn ienfollowing a
body of the enemy the scouts may
see from the spoor that the Boers
have left •the road. A Boer com-
mando leaving a. road leaves in OncS
and twos. • Inforthation is sent back
to the general, and he asks-, how
many have left andhowmany 'nave
followed along the road. This is a
difficult question to answer. Find-
ing that there is some doubt for a
time. he goes on. Tbe scouts report
that all the Boers have left the road
and gone to the west. By this time
it is four o'cloe. The columns must
get to its camping ground, •. where
there is water. Thc general decides
to leave the peeve and goes on.

rons to Iodate the enemy. These go

some hours and again locate the

that as he has to he at the town

This is an advantage for the yea
pions geuerele and commanders of
columns, but it is wasteful of the
fighting resources of Great and
Greater Britain end unfair to the
mounted troops and their leaders.
As a matter of fact, by far the
greater part of the actual work , of
capture is done in the face of "com-
manding" hindrances by the irregu-
lar and regular mounted MOH and
their officers. When the official re-
port comes in it is stated that Col.
So-and-so or Cele. So-and-so killed

Scottish Horse, the Clana.dian Scouts
or the Imperial Light Horse, or
Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, the
Cape Mounted Rifles, or the 3.st,
2nd, 3rd, 2.5th Mounted Infantry, or
other mounted coeps have actually
done the work. When a mobile col-
umn marches it is watched by the
Boers, who aro out in ones •or twos
all over the country. These report
to their commandant, who has
ample time • to decide whether to
elude' the 'column altogether or
whether, if he sees a chance, to con-
centrate and attack it, For these
reasons the record of. many a. mobile
column is one long uneventful tale of
nothing, finished by sudden disaster.
So far destructive criticism.
