Rod's Report on Sports
CFL i.eks
By Rod Hilts
Sports Editor
Last week saw quite a few surprises in the Canadian
Football League. Few people thought the Montreal
Concordes would upset the Ottawa Rough Riders, in-
cluding ane. After the Toronto Argos beat the B.C.
Lions 17-14, by three points as I predicted, I was in a
seventh heaven. The Concordes victory coupled with
Winnipeg's upset over the Edmonton Eskimos, soon
brought me down to earth.
The five point spread I offered in favor of Hamilton
soon evaporated when the Ticats throttled Saskat-
chewan 50-19.
This week Rod's Report on Sports goes into CFL
week number three with his eyes a little wider open,
hoping to improve a 2-2 record.
Calgary at Ottawa
Neither one of these clubs displayed a very good
defense in their last outings. Defense will be a deciding
factor in this one, with Ottawa holding a slim advan-
tage.
Ottawa by six
Hamilton at Winnipeg
Both teams are on a high after last week's big wins.
Brock is back for the Bombers and that alone gives
Winnipeg respectibility. Hamilton displayed a power-
ful offense against Saskatchewan. Look for a high scor-
ing game with Hamilton coming out on top.
Ticats by seven
Montreal at Toronto
Rookie QB Ron Reeves was the difference last week
against Ottawa but I doubt that he can repeat his per-
formance of four touchdown passes and one running
TD against the Argos defense. Holloway will lead the
Toronto offense all the way over the Cords.
Toronto by 13
Saskatchewan at B.C.
After allowing 50 points against Hamilton last week,
the Riders must be questioning their defense. Playing
against B.C. is no time to be playing with a ques-
tionable defense. Look for the Lions to get on track for
their first win of the season.

These days, one could say
that the Clinton Fleming -
Colts resemble the walking
wounded. Injuries have hit
the Clinton lineup hard over
the past few weeks with half
of the infield on the limp.
On July 12, injuries and a
lack of pitchers took its toll
on the Clinton Colts as they
were run over 21-1 by last
place Thorndale. One night
later, the Fleming -Colts
rebounded for a 5-0 win over
the Exeter Seniors.
Against Thorndale, Clinton
was forced into putting
multi-purpose player, Dave
Bartliff on the mound in the
fourth inning, to relieve Don
MacDonald, who had a sore
back. Bailiff's debut as a
pitcher marked the first time
he has pitched in his seven
years with the Fleming -
Colts.
Thorndale bashed out 17
hits in posting their first win
of the season.
Clinton 5 Exeter Srs 0
On July 13, Clinton beat the
pesky Exeter Seniors 5-0,
with rookie Scott MacDonald
picking up his first win of the
season.
MacDonald pitched a
complete game, allowing
only three hits and lowering
his ERA to 2.78. His record
now stands at 1-3, with one
t
save.
Dave Bartliff led Clinton's
hitting attack, collecting two
singles on three trips to the
plate.
The Fleming -Colts wasted
no time in scoring runs
against the Seniors as they
went up 2-0 after one inning
of play. Don MacDonald
started the rally by hitting a
fly ball to centre field that
was bobbled for a two -base
error. On the next pitch,
MacDonald came out of the
gate flying and stole third
base standing up. Ron Wells
then promptly smacked a 2-2
pitch into left field for a
sacrifice giving Clinton a 1-0
lead. After John Hart went
down swinging, Cam
mer tlea
MacDonald ran out a
dribbler in front of the plate
for the Fleming -Colts'
second runner of the inning.
Greg Burns lined a hard shot
off pitcher Giimour's glove
to put two men on base. A
passed ball advanced the
runners up a base and Del
Mitchelmore ,followed with
an RBI single to left field to
score Cam MacDonald.
Clinton increased their
Lead to 3-0 in the fourth in-
ning when Brent Daw
reached base, stole second
and scored on a single by
pitcher Scott MacDonald.
Dave Shaw replaced Paul
Gilmour on the mound to
start the sixth inning. Shaw,
who was signed last season
by the Quebec Nordiques,
sent down the first two
Clinton batters before giving
up an infield single to Don
MacDonald. MacDonald
turned on the jets to steal
second and scored on Ron
Wells' bullet down the third
base line. John Hart drove in
the Fleming -Colts' final run
when he blasted a double to
left -centre field to score
Wells.
Clinton's win was
especially sweet since they
have lost four out of seven
games with Exeter teams
this season.
