Penny auction
hearing held
Listowel - A preliminary
hearing into charges of theft
over $200 by three members
of the Canadian Farmers'
Survival Association (CFSA)
will continue October -12, in
Listowel.
At a preliminary hearing
held recently in Listowel,
Judge Warren Ehgoetz set
the fall date for the hearing
into charges laid against
CFSA president Allen
Wilford of Tara, vice-
president Tom Shoebotton of
Denfield and Joseph Fisher
of Rodney, as a result of a
"penny auction" held on the
farm of John Otto of RR -1
Gowanstown.
At the time of the penny
auction, the receivers for the
Elmira branch of the
Toronto -Dominion Bank,
Coopers and Lybrand, at-
tempted to hold an auction of
the farm's assets which had
been seized by the bank.
The first day of the
preliminary hearing dealt
primarily with the events
leading up to the penny
auction and included in-
tensive questioning of the T-
D branch manager by
Wilford's lawyer.
Farni Safety
stress use of
protective wear
The Canada Safety Coun-
cil's theme for Farm Safety
Week, July 25-31, is "Weed
Out Hazards - Wear Protec-
tive Equipment."
Each year there are ap-
proximately 200 accidental
deaths and some 25,000 in-
juries sustained by Canadian
farm workers.
Agricultural work injuries
involve all parts of the body,
especially the head, eyes,
ears, lungs, hands, skin and
feet. When it is impossible or
impracticable to eliminate a
hazard, personal protective
equipment must be worn.
This equipment is designed
to prevent or minimize in-
jury if an accident occurs or
if the worker is subjected to
environmental hazards. One
should first determine the
need for protective equip-
ment then select proper
types for hazards faced in a
particular operation. Con-
sult with your Provincial
Department of Agriculture
representative and your
equipment supplier.

June 29 or early morning of
June 30. The safe contained
about $2,000 in cheques and
cash.

gained through a back door
and a window was broken in
the incident.
