Ma Tying in the height of
the depression didn't
threaten James and Vera
McIntosh's love. It in fact
brought the couple closer as
they striv,;1. for common
goals, success, a family,
health and happiness.
Today the McIntosh s can
look back at those years
tea the comforts of their
Tuckersmith Township
home. They remember the
hard times and appreciate
their good life today.
Surrounded by loving
family and friends, the
Mclntoshs celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary on
July 4.
"The depression didn't
keep people from getting
married," Mr. McIntosh
remembered. "We just
dn't waste a cent, :lye
aved every penny."
The bells at the Brucefie
United Church rang l
celebration of the McIntosh's
wedding 50 years ago. The
affair was small, but the
newlyweds did treat
themselves to a Montreal
e we`'=1'{l
their low.,
honeymoon.
They had met a few years
earalier while Mrs.
McIntosh was teaching at SS
No. 7. It wasn't love at first
sight, but Mr. McIntosh
teased, "1 didn't have much
schooling so I had to marry
someone with an education."
The Mclntoshs settled into
their Tuckersmith home and
worked hard to make a profit
from farming. Those were
the days when pigs sold for
$3 and eggs went for 12 cents
a dozen.
"They howl about the
recession," Mrs. McIntosh
noted, "but today the young
people don't know what it
was like."
The secret to their long
and happy marriage, Mr.
McIntosh explained, is
simply, '`Keep busy and you
won't have time to argue."
The Mclntoshs were in-
deed busy. They raised two
children Jim and Mrs. Mary
( Lawrence) Butt. They in
turn have given the
Mclntoshs five grand-
children.
Family, friends and neigh-
bors joined with the an-
niversary couple on July 3
for an open (louse party at
their home.
