Council receives recreation grant
By Rod Hilts
Blyth council recently
received a grant of $3,783
from the Ministry of Culture
and Recreation. The grant
will be used to assist various
recreational groups in the
village.
At their July 4 meeting,
council donated $400 to Blyth
Lions Club swimming; $800
to Blyth Figure Skating; $600
to minor ball; $700 to minor
hockey and $1,285 toward
Memorial Hall finances.
In 1982, Blyth figure
skating registration in-
.
creased, which resulted in an
increase of $550 in the 1983
recreation grant.
In other business the
village received a $500 grant
from the Ministry of
Municipal Affairs and
Housing to be used for public
celebrations of the 1984
Ontario Bicentennial.
According to Clerk Larry
Walsh the council will be
planning a weekend
celebration in 1984 with
money made available by
the grant.
Council approved the
following building permits:
Susan Howson, house ad-
dition; Dave Medd, garage
and storage area; Rod and
Pat •Ansley, three bedroom
house; Howson and Howson,
addition to storage barn;
Alvin Snell, demolition of a
house and Bob Machan,
garage.
Drive safely in rain-
A heavy rain means poten-
tial danger for a driver. The
water lifts accumulated oil
from the pavement and
causes intermittent "slicks"
until the oil has been washed
away. The Ontario Safety
League advises motorists in
any rain to cut your speed.

Exeter won't
change
EXETER - Members of
Exeter council are con-
cerned as most people about
the steady increase in
education taxes, but they
decided last week not to join
a movement to have the
provincial government
assume all responsibility ftir
the funding of education.
That suggestion came in
the form of a resolution from
(the County of Nor-
thumberland, which asked
that if the province refused
to take over the funding, that
at least school boards
arrange for the collection of
their own taxes "as it has
become more apparent that
school boards have no in-
tention of living within any
guidelines.
Mayor Brure Shaw noted
that if the province did take
over education funding, it
would result in increased
i)icome taxes or sales taxes.
