July 5 and 6, Blyth swelled
with the arrival of hundreds
of dogs for the ninth and
tenth All Breed Champion-
ship Dog Show and the first
and second Obedience Trials
hosted by the Bluewater
Kennel Club.
Entrants came from
across Canada and the
U.S.A., some bringing as
many as 15 to 20 of their best
show dogs.
There were a Ag of 113
American exhib ors- Total
entries were 504 d s on July
5, 47 of these dogs competing
in the Obedience Trials and
490 dogs on July 6 with 45 of
these canines doing Obe-
dience work.
The Conformation Judges
also arrived from various
points in the U.S.A. and
Canada. Louis Hamsher ar-
rived from Dayton, Ohio;
Wm. Kendrick from
Queensbury, Devon, Penn.;
Frank Oberstar from
Euclid, Ohio; Vincent Perry
from Canoga Park, Calif.;
and Mrs. Betty Peterson
from Grimsby, Ont.
Obedience Judges were
Marguerite Charter from
Brantford and Mrs. Gitta
Kleinert from Lively, Ont.
Judge Mr. Perry, now
residing in California, is a
native Londoner. A one-time
correspondent for The Globe
and Mail he was also in-
terested in acting, having
won at the Dominion Drama
Festival and received his
award from one of Canada's
late Governor -Generals,
Lord Bessborough.
Judging started Tuesday
at the Blyth Community Cen-
tre. In the Obedience Ring
Sons are not silent
By Janet Tench
The Sons of Silence, (Randy Lobb and Dave Lobb from
Clinton Shaun Rahbek, and Jim MacDonald from
Goderich) despite their name, are loud rockers. In their
repertoire are the works of the Police, U2, Who, and The
Rolling Stones.
The Sons formed in April of this year. Cousins Randy
and Dave had played together in Glass Works. When two
Glass Works members went to University, Jim (Dave's
best friend) and Shaun worked their way in.
The Sons are guitar -based: Shaun is an incredible
guitarist - his powerful licks provide the lead guitar; Dave
plays bass with a bouncing beat; and Jim is stunning - not
only does he play guitar, he's the band's frontman. Randy,
of course, is known for his frenzied, bizarrely energetic
drums.
If you've ever seen the Solis, you'll know that the band
members have images. Shaun, with his closely cropped
hair, and neat style of dress is a quiet, shy man hiding
,behind sunglasses, yet able to rip off raunchy rock with
ease. Dave is a cool, laid back guy. Jim, the lead vocalist,
is thin, with an English rocker look about him that's sen-
sual. Randy is the total ANIMAL FREAK!
The Sons of Silence will be playing in Exeter on July 22
as well as a few dates playing at roller skating.
the high score for Novice A
went to a Rough Collie by the
name of Miss Golden Sunrise
from Listowel. Her score
was 195 points. All scores are
out of a possible 200 for a
perfect IsFore. Novice B's
winner had a score of 198.
Valentine's Dixieland
Melody, a Golden'Retriever
from Toledo, Ohio, also won
a trophy.
In the Open A Class, the
trophy was won by a Ger-
man Shepherd, Sheike's
Pride from Kincardine with
a score of 1771/2. Open B was
won by another Golden
Retriever, Wynwood's Jum-
pin Jacks from Fair Haven,
Mi. His score was 199x/2.
Besides his trophy in the
Open B Class, he also won-
$150 cash and additional
prizes for having the highest
qualifying score for Tues-
day's Trial. Utility's trophy
winner had a score of 196
points. Champion Shadywell
Kalon Kimberlin, a Golden
Retriever from Gloucester;
Ont. took top honors.
In the final judging for
Tuesday, Best in Show went
to Joyce Bernhardt and her
Schipperke, Bermudian,
American, and Canadian
Champion Camplaren's
Native Son from North
Gower, Ont. For her long
hours of grooming, hard
work, and many shows,
Joyce Bernhardt received
$150 cash, a plant in an
engraved planter and the
Best in Show Rosette. Best
Puppy in Show for Tuesday
went to a Bouviers Des
Flanders by the name of
Quiche's Gabriel, bred by C.

Paquette from Maidstone,
Ont. Best Puppy in Show won
a plant, a rosette, and $25
cash.
Best in Show and Best
Puppy in Show were both
judged by Mr. Wm. Ken-
drick.
Wednesday's judging got
under way with 45 dogs
waiting to do jumps,
retrieves, and precision
heeling. The Obedience ring
got off to a fast start. Novice
A's high score of 1941/2 was
again won by Miss Golden
Sunrise from Listowel.
Trowsnest Holy Moses had
high score in the Novice B
division with a score of 195, a
Golden Retriever from
Rochester, N.Y. The Open A
division trophy and rosette
was won by yesterday's divi-
sion winner, Sheike's Pride,
a German Shepherd from
Kincardine with a score of
178.
Open B division had a tie
with both dogs earning a
score of 197. Mrs. Gitta
Kleinert was asked to break
the' tie. This was done by
having both dogs heeling
with their handlers and sit-
ting as soon as their masters
stopped. Precision, speed in
sitting, and accuracy now
played an even bigger role.
Champion Carolee's Kali-
Kimaka, a Golden Retriever
from Mississauga, lost to
Scobie's Rab Bruce O'Kin-
A
i'nerica s
naird, a Shetland sheep dog
from Guelph. This Shetland
sheep dog also had highest
score during Wednesday's
trial and won additional
prizes including $150.
In the Utility Class a score
of 196 was obtained by
Champion Tymorro's Penny
Candy, a Shetland sheep dog
from Wauwatosa, Wis.
Show results in the Confor-
mation Ring were decided in
the Blyth Arena by Judge
Perry. Best in Show was won
by a miniature Schnauzer,
Neusky's Blue Is My World,
from Yellow Springs, Oh. He
won a rosette, $150 cash and
a plant. Best Puppy in Show
was won by a Beagle under
13 inches, Buttonwood's
Casandra, from Oil Springs.
She also won a plant, rosette
and $25.
Tuesday and Wednesday
proved to be very successful
days, but only because of the
hard work and dedication of
the Bluewater Kennel Club
and the Superintendence of
Canine Show Services head-
ed by Mrs. Irene Gilham
from Brantford. Irene is in
charge of drawing up Judg-
ing Schedules, setting up the
Official Show Catalogue and
having it printed, ordering
the ribbons and rosettes, ac-
cepting entries and many
other details which make the
Bluewater Show a success.

by our own Show Chairman,
Mrs. Florence Pullen. Some
of Florence's many tasks are
those of picking a show loca-
tion, hiring judges, finding
ring stewards, getting ring
equiparient, contacting a
C.K.C. representative, hir-
itlg kitchen staff, contacting
a show photographer, as well
as many other jobs that help
to make a good show run
smoothly and be a success.
These two ladies are the
backbone of the Bluewater
Kennel Club's show.
Already plans are under
way for the 1984 show, with
judges being considered and
selected.
Many of the dogs left Blyth
to head for Tavistock and
Woodstock where they will
compete for points towards
their championships and
beautiful prizes. Summer is
dog show time with shows all
across Canada and the
U.S.A. and points beyond. It
takes a lot of time, patience,
hard work, and money to
show your dog. There is
much travel involved as well
as grooming aids, entry fees,
and if you don't show your
own dog, then handler fees.
People take their hobby
seriously, and somewhere,
sometime, it all started with
the love of a dog.
