The bylaw allows the township to enter into an agreement to purchase the land and building previously owned by the Bank of Montreal for $19,000. Municipal taxpayers in Clinton received good news again this year, when for the second year in a row, Clinton council has held the line on taxes. At a special meeting last Tuesday night, council passed their 1978 budget that will see taxes go up only one per cent. 10 years ago July 5,1973 Huron county council members learned that they will soon have to start thinking about a possible extension to facilities at Huronview Horne for the Aged. Both J.L. McCutcheon, chairman of the Huronview Board of Management and C.A. Archibald, Huronview administrator, told the meeting that the waiting list for bed care is steadily growing. They told the members there was no in- creased pressure m other service areas at Huronview but that more space for bed care residents was a growing need. Fire last Sunday afternoon caused an estimated $40,000 damage to a barn and equipment of George Lavis on his farm near Holmesville. Lost in the blaze were a tractor, a manure spreader and a hay wagon. The barn, containing about 500' bales of hay, was destroyed. 25 years ago July 10,1958 Clinton Town Council this week formally requested the Ontario Department of Planning and Development to conduct a. survey to determine the need for rental housing in the town. This follows the favorable reception delegates from Clinton met with in Toronto, when they met with the Hon. W.M. Nickle, Q.C. minister for the department. The survey, which will be carried out in the near future, is designed to discover the actual needs of homes and will indicate to the department the number of homes and type of homes needed. • A letter of appreciation was received from the Clinton Community Credit Union concerning the new sidewalk and suggesting they were willing to black- top lacktop their property out to the sidewalk. 50 years ago July 7,1932 A daring robbery took place in Clinton Sunday night or early Monday morning when a truck was backed up to the door of Gunn, Langlois Company's warehouse, the door forced open and eighty crates of eggs removed, valued at over $400. A severe ligltning bolt in an electric storm early the other morning entered the residence of Mr. G.D. McTaggert, putting his electric range out of com- mission. 75 years ago July 9, 1908 Mr. Fenwick Stewart of Stanley received on Tuesday an express parcel which contained two horned toads. They came all the way from Kansas having been sent by his uncle, Mr. Samuel Stewart. They were as lively when the box opened as if sunshine and fresh air were not necessary to their existence whatsoever. The name horned toads is quite fitting. NV years ago July 6, 1883 A number of people in Mitchell have been taken ill with a species of cholera recently, supposed to be caused by the heavy rains flooding the wells with surface water. The new sidewalks in Londesboro greatly add to the appearance of the village. It at present boasts of the longest length of plank walk of any village of its size in Ontario. r
