. A fanner in New York is reported
as having owned a dog on which he
paid taxes as required by law. One
morning he found the dog had killed
seven ewe sheep, and was busy at the
throat of another. Very naturally he
shot the dog, and then sent a bill to
the coupty commissioner of $60 for
the eight sheep his dog had killed.
They were inclined to laugh at this at
first, but he insisted that, as he had to
pay taxes on the dog, he had the same
mght to receive damage, as any other
man would have had. And their coun-
sel advisedithem to pay it, which they

Mitckesazie & Mann have made
another big stepe toward making. the
Canadian Northern a transcontipental
railway, with Victoria as its Paeifie
coast terminal. Mr. Dan. Mann stated
that the syndicate had obtained from
the Donsmuirs an option on the Esquis
malt and Nanairoo Railway, 74 riles
in length, which traverses Vancouver
Island and gives an outlet for, the pro-
duce of Nanahno colliery. The inten-
tion of the Canadian Northern is to
run its line, from the Saskatchewan,
which it will reach this summer, in a
north-westerly direction through the
Yellow Head Pass into Northern
British Columbia, reaching the coast
at Bute Inlet. Here the main line will
be connected by a ferry, such as those
on the Detroit River or Hudson, with
the Nanahno Railway, and passengers
will be carried into Victoria without
leaving their cars. Mr. Mann said
that the Dansinuir colleries were in
no way bound tip in the deal.
Major-General Lord Dundonald was
seen on Saturday, by a correspondent,
to whom he said that be had given a
reply with reference to the acceptance
or otherwise of the position of general
officer • commanding the Canadian
militia, but as the commuications were
up to the rireseet of ke confidential
character, be would not he justified in
giving any information thereon to the
press.' The Earl said he had at one
time thought of visiting Canada with
a view of studying the situation, and
to judge for himself whether or not to
accept theposition. Be is of the opin-
ion that the general officer command-
ing should be subordinate to the Min-
ister o2Militia, He strongly favors
givingSuch positionsto men capable of
filling them. Family status or social
position would have no weight with
him in the conferring of appointments
of that nature. He is also of the
opinion that Canadian officers should
interchange with other colonies, and
does not approve of garrisoning ruen
in large towns, owing to the temp-
tations which such places offer. itis
understood that Lord Dundonald will
accept the position provided certain
suggestions contained in his reply will
be folloveed. Indeed it is safe to say
that His Lordship accepts provision-
ally. Whenlast interviewed, he ap-
peared anxious to do so. *

METHOD OF
37 MELINDA ST., TORONTO,
To Fill Large ?,ontracts—Cod Wages
Easily Earned.
We want a few more workers in this
locality, at once, and in order to secure
your co-operation without the delay of
correspondence, we herewith ; explain
our full plan in this advertisement.
The work is simple, and the Machine
is easily operatedand with the Guide,
requires no teacher. If you wish to
join our staff of Workers let us hear from Neu
promptly with the Contract, order form, and re-
mittance, as a guarantee, and we will send
machine and outfit to hegira work at once.
'e wish to secur e the services of -families to do knitting
for us in their homes. Our method is the same as adopted
In England. We are the introducers of this plan and the
largest. knitting concern in Canada.
After long experience, we have been able to produce an
Automatic Machine by which all kinds of seamless knit-
ting is now done by our Family Machine, thereby enabling
anyone of ordinary intelligence to quickly learn to do the
work from the Instruction Guide. All we require is that
You use the machine according to direetions. The Machine
being made expressly for this purpose, and the; operation
so simple, it cannot poseibly make a mistake in its work.
The great demand now is for Bicycle Stockings, Wood-
men's Socks, and Motormen's Mittens, and as -vee are un-
able to supply the demand, have taken this method of ad-
vertising for more help.
' The large eapore. trade to the North-west Territories.
Et1i,b Columbia, and the British Colonies, furnishes an un-
, limit eel „demand for otir goods, and, with the combined co-
oneratiort of the. many families we are employing, together
with the large amount of knitting. we are able to turn out,
by which we- save rents,. insurance. interest on capital, etc.,
enables els to -"undersell any manufacturers of this class of
goods, and we have sale for all the, knitting we can have
turned out.
The price we pay for finished bicycle stockings is $10.00
per hundred, or at the rate of 10c per pair; woodmen's
eocks, 5c, mid motormen's mittens, • 12c a pair. All other
work in proportion to size.
The machine can be operated by any one of a family,
and at our prices any energetic family should be able to
snetaln themselves comfortably, and in time be a. source of
in el ye endent corn for t.
Our plan is to send out each machine to beginners with
a seek or stocking partially knitted, and remaining in the
ma ehine ready to be continued, and also enough yarn to
knit one pair af sample socks or stockings and a simple
anis compleee Instruction Guide, sbowing hove the work
te be done °When the samples have been finished and
returned to .8 oat'sfactory, we send a. quantity of yarn,
wEiree -eon keit and return likewise when finished. We
prepay charges on all work one way, and our workers pay
return charges. The work, as we have stated, is temple and
ratedle- acme. the mac:lithe having a capacity •;1' •en thou-
sand etitehes a -minute. We have many persons now in our
emnloy who can knit from twenty-five to thirty pairs of
eeelee or stockings a clay, and where the time of a family
js devoted to the work, you can, readily see that $15,00 or
seSeel0 ner week can be easily earned.
We furnish our workers all the materials. yarn, etc.,
free. aryl everything that is necessary for the work. We
