Williams Thursday Mght, Dec. 17, marked the wind down of night class at Central Huron Secondary School here in Clinton until January llth, and along with this a Christmas party was held, highlighted by a martial arts demonstration of Kung -Fu. The dazzling 25 minute demonstration was put on by Black Belt instructor, James Straughan and his class, who have been actively working out in the main gymnasium on Thursday evenings over the past 10 weeks. The students, most of who have had no previous mar- tial arts experience, showed the audience their acquired skills. The agenda included a show of techniques and a form and free -style sparr- ing. The demonstration con- cluded by turning about $20 worth of boards into kindling through the use of various kicking and punching techni- ques. To say the least, a very impressive demonstration. Straughan, from Goderich, is a recent graduate of the U.W.O. social sciences faculty with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, and has been in- - volved in the martial arts for almost a decade. A member of the university's martial arts club for the past six years, Jim is the only person to have the distinction of receiving a Black Belt in Kung -Fu from Paul Chau, founder and head instructor of the University of Western Ontario's Black Dragon Martial Arts Club. After the demonstration Jim said "Martial arts of many forms direct their energy toward the achieve- ment of physical fitness and the harmonious blending of i 'rhriques for practical and effective self-defence. Jim stressed that in his. classes an open learning at- titude and respect for mar- tial arts skill, along with the sharing experience, mutual instruction, vigorous fitness sessions and constant prac- tice is used. Classes will resume in January and interested per- sons should contact the high school. while Randy McLean was also fourth with Shiaway Red for Frances Edwards of Arkona in the sixth.
