Playhouse shows first ever profit in 1981
The Huron Country
Playhouse recorded its best
year ever for finances and
artistic performances, the
Playhouse's Board of
Trustees was told at its
annual meeting held
recently at Sanders Tavern.
Artistic director Aileen
TaylorgSmith reported that
"it was a big season, and the
quality was evenly spread
throughout, too. Next year
should be even better for
us.”
Financially, the
Playhouse's expenses were
higher this year, but revenue
was also higher, neral
manager Heather Reddick
said. Subscriptions were up
by 17 percent, government
subsidies rose by;13,000, and
support from private, cor-
porate and foundation
sources was in excess of
;60,000, she said.
Box office receipts rose by
;30,000 and average at-
tendance per show increased
percent, she added.
The Board met to review
the year's financial
statement and to install the

A bright note in the
statement of operations was
the profit of $10,000, the first
profit ever recorded, Part of
the reason for this was the
rise in operating donations
from $20,254 last year to $200,000-
;90,480 this year. Seven fund-
raising events yielded;7,535,
a 100 percent improvement
over 1980. Revenue from

That mad month of
December is upon us, and
everyone seems to be party-
ing. Office parties and house
parties seem to spring out of
the woodwork, and it's all too
easy to suddenly find
yourself double or even tri-
ple booked.
That's why I want to re-
mind you about the
Christmas Draw party at
Branch 140. This little get
together is always one of the
most popular of the year and
for good reasons. Prizes are
plentiful, the company is
friendly, and the atmosphere
is always warm, no matter
what the weather outside.
So, get out the calendar and
mark off Dec. 19 as definite-
ly prebooked for a party.
And, speaking of
• Christmas parties, the
Ladies Auxiliary had theirs
on Monday night and it was
well attended. The men did a
fantastic job of serving up
shrimp cocktail, cornish
game hen, roasted potatoes,
spare ribs, fried rice etc.,
finished off with a lovely par-
fait p ,:dessert. It's a little
gestr iv that helps us try to
say thanks, and show our ap-
preciation to the ladies for
all the fine work they -do.
throughout the year. Thank
you again ladies.
New Year's tickets -are on
sale, so get yours now. This
event is always a complete
sellout, and the only way to
%Ir
avoid disappointment is to
get organized early. It's
always fun to get a crew
together, so figure out who
all is going and make a visit
to the bar.
In darts last week, John
Scott and Brenda Bottema
won the distinction of being
the high couple. (They also
won at darts.) Karen
Greidanus won high lady and
Lloyd Butler high man.
Madelon Yeats and ,Terry,
Hollingshead were the low
couple, but everyone knows
you can't win them all. (One
or two would be nice,
though.)
And, as a parting word,
don't forget our weekly
specials on b ilding
materials. The boys re d}-
ing a fine job, ani
everything is moving along
at a very good clip. If you do
happen to have a few hours
to spare some evening, I'm
sure that any help you could
offer would be fully ap-
preciated.
Well, hope I didn't make
any mistakes this week.
John will straighten me out
in the next column if I did;
unless he gets tied up at the
English Parlour that is.
The;10,000 profit was used
to decrease the working
capital deficiency for this
year and some amounts
owed to the Holding Foun-
dation, the Playhouse's
capital company.
This year the Playhouse
put on two musicals, which
made expenses higher last
year, she said.
Executive member Bill
Amos reminded his fellow

trustees that "the bulk of
money here is returned to -
the community. Some people
don't recognize the im-
portance of the theatre. It's a
;400,000 industry, and when,
related effects are Included,
the total picture is over one
million dollars.
The Board also decided to
re -appoint its auditors, Ward
Mallette of Exeter, for
another year.
