The regular monthly meeting of the Clirton Women's
Institute (WI) was held November 27. President Mrs.
Cecil Elliott was in the chair and conducted the
opening exercises, opening the meeting with a reading.
She was assisted by Mrs. C. Lockhart in dispensing
with the business of the day.
The sum of $100 was voted to the Building Fund of the
Vlinton Public Hospital. The Roll Call was answered
by, an old game played at school, and brought back
many childhood memories. It was decided to have a
treat and go out for a Christmas Dinner on Wednesday
December 16 at 1 p.m. meeting to follow in the Board
Room of the O.M.A.F. office.
Mrs. Lois Elliott who was a delegate to the London
Area Convention held in St. Marys on November 5th
and 6th, gave an excellent account of this 67th annual
get-together of 435 representatives from 126 branches
covered in the London Area comprising 10 districts.
The meeting was chaired by Mrs. Gordon Papple, RR
No. 5 Seaforth, President of the Area, who stated in her
remarks that we must all do a lot of little things to
accomplish any big job. She mentioned that an award
of merit had been given to Miss Helen McKercher, who
had retired five years ago, and who had served as
Director of Home Economics under the department of
agriculture for 20 years. She presently lives in Strat-
ford.
At the banquet which was held in the St. Marys'
arena and Community Centre, the Guest Speaker was
Miss Elaine Townshend of Clinton, who spoke on "The
Handicapped", doing an excellent job.
The President of the Federated Women's Institute of
Ontario, Mrs. Keith Heipleh of Springfield, gave many
highlights of Women's Institute work, and announced
some interesting events coming up in 1982. The
F.W.I.O. will be celebrating their 85th anniversary at
FROZEN ORANGE OR GRAPEFRUIT JUICE

the Constellation Hotel in Toronto, on August 12th, 'next
year, and each branch In Ontario WM De, privileged to
buy two tickets for this event. In June 1982 the FWIO
will hold their Convention in Fredericton, N.B. when 10
ladies from each area across Cana 1 will be privileged
to attend. The price of the WI badge has been reduced
to the price of $6. Mts. Helpleh suggested that a
membership committee beadded to the branch slate of
officers next year to help boost membership. The week
of February 19th, has been set aside as Institute Week.
Miss Molly Magee, Director of home Economics
Branch, ministry of agriculture and food, stated that
out of 5,000, 4 -Club Leaderslast year 3,000 were WI
members. She announced that the first Leader's
conference would be held in Toronto, later in
November 1981. She gave some statistics on the decline
of family life, reporting that at the end of June 1981, in
Canada, 35 percent of marriages have ended in
divorce; 17 percent of children live in single parent
homes; while drugs and alcohol seem to be the main
problem among teenagers. Young people with 4-H Club
training seem to be better adjusted, and she urged that
study groups might be a great asset in solving these
problems.
In a report by the Home Economists of the counties
of Oxford, Elgin, Huron, Perth, and Middlesex, Mrs.
Bea Gosselin acted as chairman, and the panel in-
troduced some new food items such as goat milk
products now found in health stores; pickling vinegar;
liquid baking chocolate; and shelf milk; meat in a box,
etc.
The 1982 Convention will be hosted by West and South
Huron, and will he held in the same Community Centre
in St. Marys,
At the close of this report Lois called upon Miss Jane
Muegge, local Home Economist for Huron County who
had a film entitled The Super Supermarket, which
explained the new code system which will soon be in
use in supermarkets locally, and which is now being
practised in larger supermarkets in London, Toronto,
Peterborough, etc. The lines and numbers on our
grocery package is called a Universal Product Code,
which speaks in computer language. A scanner is built
into each supermarket counter,a,n d as the products or
packages are passed over the @canner it reads the
code, and sends the price and nal a of the product to
the check-out register. It' also records the number of
each item sold, and in turn the manager knows what
products are not moving, and knows what to put on
sale. This aids both the buyer and the manager, and
also speeds the purchasing of goods for the customer.
Miss Muegge conducted a question and answer
period, which was most helpful and educational. Mrs.
Lorne Radford presented Miss Muegge with a gift in
appreciation of her talk.
At the close of the meeting lunch was served by Mrs.
Klaus Kroesen and her committee.

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Goldsworthy
Kindness is the key
to 50 years together
According to Mrs. Alfred Goldsworthy,
kindness is the key word to a long and
happy marriage. Few would argue with
Mrs. Goldsworthy on this point, since she
and her husband recently celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Goldsworthy were married
on November 25th, 1931 at St. Joseph's
Catholic Church in Clinton. Alfred, a
native of England, and his wife Olive, a
former Morris Township resident, met
when Alfred was working at the Hullett
Township farm of Jack Vodden. They
dated for three years, then married and
settled into a long and happy marriage.
The Goldsworthys fanned in Hullett for
many years and were kept busy raising
nine children, Mrs. Mary .(Ernie)
McGlynn of Kitchener, Mrs. Marjorie
(Pat) Brohman of Hamilton, Mrs. June
(Earl) Shipman of Prince George, B.C.,
Paul of Clinton, Mrs. Theresa (Frank)
Boote of Chatham, Mrs. Ruth (Tony)
Hayek of Kitchener, Mrs. Alfred
(Raymond) Hallahan of Wingham, Mrs.

Jill (Jeff) Davies of Hamilton and John of
Clinton.
Recently, on November 21st, their
family held an open -reception at the
Clinton Legion Hall in honor of their
parents' golden anniversary. The whole
family was present, including many of
their 34 . grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
The Goldsworthys received many gifts
from friends and neighbors, including an
Apostalic Blessing from' The Vatican.
They were given a special plaque from the
Province of Ontario, and congratulatory
notes from Huron -Bruce MP Murray
Cardiff and Huron -Middlesex MPP Jack
Riddell.
A special mass was offered to them the
following Sunday morning at St. Joseph's
Church. Afterwards the the whole family
gathered at the Goldsworthys Victoria
Street home in Clinton where a lovely
luncheon was served, and a real old
fashioned get-together was enjoyed by all.
Their son-in-law Frank Boote took
photographs.
