Second Sunday
in Advent
The service for the second Sunday m Ad-
vent was conducted by Rev. Stanley
McDonald at Hensall United Church on
December 6. The second Advent candle
was lit by Glen Slade representing the
yore people of the congregation and
reminding the congregation that a gift is at
the heart of Christmas. ..
The service. opened with a c arol-sing and
the senior choir sang with Mrs. Donna St.
John taking the solo part. The children
were shown a collection of Christmas sym-
bols, bells, a star and other things and then
reminded that it is not these things that
make Christmas but the birth of Jesus
Christ.
The sermon was entitled "Shalom, my
friends, Shalom". Shalom signifies
something even greater than the joy of
Christmas = it includes the joy and the
peace and the highest fulfillment of
The Communion was ad-
ministered following the sermon.
Welcoming worshippers were Rick
McGee and ushers were David and John
Rowcliffe, Edison Forrest and Ken
McLean. The United Church women met
following the service for their annual
meeting.
White Gift Service
White Gift Service was held in Carmel
Presbyterian Church on Sunday when
members of the Sunday School took their
place in the front of the church and
presented their gifts and sang two
numbers and Miss Tammy Bell lit the se-
cond candle of Advent.
The church auditorium was beautifully
decorated and a lighted tree made a set-
ting for the festive season. The decorating
was capably done by the members of the
Arnold Circle Evening Auxiliary. Miss
Sandra Wadel was a guest playing two
solos on her accordion. Misses Janet Hog-
garth and Donna Taylor read scripture
passages.
Rev. Kenneth Knight conducted the ser-
vice
ervice and delivered a message on "Chris-
tian Hope". The children were accom-
panied by the organist, Mrs. Dorothy
Taylor.
Sunday, December 13, Communion will
be held. The Young People of the church
will meet on Wednesday evening,
December 9th at 7:30 p.m. Choir practise
willbe held on Thursday evening,
December 10th at 7 p.m. Please attend .
these meetings.
People Report
Mrs. Evelyn Flynn returnedio her home
after spending the past week with her
daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill
O'Brien and family at Brigden.
Mr. Jack Corbett who has been confined
to his home owing to illness is somewhat
improved.
Several area residents enjoyed a bus trip
in company with Exeter residents on
Saturday to the market at Kitchener and
visited Elmira.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Chaffe and Sally of
Mitdiell visited on Sunday with Mrs.
Giraffe's parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cor-
bett.

The families of the Hensall Branch of the
Canadian Legion and Ladies' Auxiliary
entertained their families to an enjoyable
afternoon on Sunday when slides wre
shown, followed by gifts, treats and lunch
served by the ladies.
The draw for the Money Doll sponsored
by the Ladies' Legion Auxiliary will be
made December 23rd, with first prize $50,
second prize, $25. The doll is on display in
the window at William's Hairstyling.
Visitors at Queensway
Visiting with Mrs. Wilds were Henry and
Marie Wilds, Dianne Wilds and friends,
Amanda and Irma Wilds, Ken Dogan. Mrs.
Taylor, Vera Pincombe, Thelma Russell
visited Louise Mitchell, also her grand-
sons, Jim and Barry Denrocke.
Iva Ridley and Ilia Dunn visited Vera
L.ammie Joan Betteridge and Violet
Bishop visited Irene Kalbfleisch. Mr. and
Mrs. William Westlake and Mr. Wallace
Makins visited Miss Mary Westlake.
Mabel Stanlake and Ma Love of Exeter
visited Mrs. Leah Keyes. Doug and Eva
Triebner and Tom and Noella Triebner
visited their mother, Mrs. Triebner.
Steve and Minke Soepboer visited Alice
Rozendall — her husband Don also visited
with her. Mrs. Finkbeiner spent Sunday at
the home of her son and family at
Crediton. Mrs. Mary Parlmer spent the
weekend with her sister Mrs. Helen
Thompson.
Bethel Reformed Ladies entertained the
residents with Christmas carols and bingo
last week. Rev. Minor conducted the
church service on Tuesday.
Christmas party time
The United Church Sunday School held
their annual Christmas party on Friday
evening for all the Sunday School students
with an excellent attendance. The evening
opened with carol singing followed by a
film, "The Night the Animals Talked"
-with a discussion with the children.
Games period divided the group into
three smaller groups with Pam Scotchmer
- and Beth McGee le ung the kindergarten
section. Janis BisbE tk and Mary Ann Topp
led the junior section and Heather Forest,
Sharon Wurm and Pat Cook led the senior
section. Following a very enjoyable games
period all students returned to the
Fellowship Hall where Santa arrived with
treats for all the children.
The junior choir of the United Church en-
joyed a pizza party as guests of Rev.
McDonald, at the Manse on Thursday
afternoon following their practice. The
junior choir will . lead in the ministry of
music at the January 3 service ,and will
assist the senior choir at the Christmas
Family Service on Sunday, December 27.
The Chiselhurst congregation met on
Monday evening in Hensall Church and
completed their business on the,
disbursements of funds prior to their of-
ficial closing and amalgamation, with the
Hensall United Church. They also decided
to hold a congregational pot luck supper
and fellowship evening in the Hensall
Church on Tuesday, December 29th at 6:45
p.m. at which time they will also hear the
annual reports.

Noble Grand Bertha MacGregor presid-
ed for the meeting of Amber Rebekah
Lodge on Wednesday evening assisted by
the Vice -Grand Gladys Coleman who gave
the report of the visiting committee. Mrs.

Elizabeth Riley reported for the C.P.T.
committee stating arrangements were
made for the shut-ins' treats at Christmas.
Bertha MacGregor reported on the United
Nations meeting held recently at Clinton.
Arrangements were made for the
Christmas party to be held on December
16th following the meeting with an ex-
change of gifts. Several cards of thanks
were received. Euchre bingo was played
and refreshments were served by the
social committee.
Legion Ladies
make donations
The regular meeting of the Legion
Ladies Auxiliary was held on Tuesday
evening with the president, Mrs. Alice
Neilands presiding. Donations were made
to the Day Care Centre at Huronview,
minor hockey and free skating for the
children at the Hensall Arena.
Plans were ` finalized to purchase gifts
for Life Members and the Veterans at
Westminster Hospital. The ladies will visit
the Queensway Nursing Manor at
Christmas with treats. A discussion arose
on The Vial of Life. The members ex-
changed gifts and lunch was served and a
social hour enjoyed.
UCW enjoy dinner

UCW of Chiselhurst held their Christmas
meeting in the Fellowship Hall of Hensall
United Church. The tables were tastefully
decorated and a Christmas tree presented
a splendid appearance. There were 25 at-
tending.
President, Mrs. Dorothy Brintnell open-
ed the meeting with prayer and a
Christmas poem. Mrs. Earls Coleman had
a meaningful Christmas worship and the
members sang several Christmas hymns,
throughout the worship. Mrs. Don
Kerslake favoured with Christmas selec-
tions at the piano. Rev. McDonald gave the
Message "Our Christmas Celebrations,
How We Put Christ Into Christmas". The
roll call was answered by naming a gift we
could remember receiving in childhood.
An invitation was received to the General
meeting of Hensall U.C.W. The group will
now be known as Unit No. 3 of Hensall
UCW. A thank you note was received from
Jean Cole and who had been previously
honoured by her mother with a Life
Membership and pin.
The January meeting was reviewed and
the slate of officers for the coming year is
as follows: leader, Mrs. Dorothy Brint-
nell; assistant, Mrs. Harold Parker;
secretary, Mrs. Jack Brintnell; assistant,
Mrs. Ted Roberts; treasurer, Mrs. Alvin
Cole; pianist, Mrs. Alf Ross; program,
Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Dorothy Brintnell;
friendship, Mrs. Dick Taylor and Mrs. Alf
Ross; social, Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Mary Brint-
nell, Mary Kinsman. Church in Society,
Mrs. Harold Parker and Mrs. Beatrice
Munn; Christian Development, Mrs.
Gerald Glenn; leadership, Mrs. Earle Col-
eman; nomination, Mrs. Fredo Boa. The
exchange of gifts brought the afternoon to
a close with the benediction. Mrs. Mabel
Glenn, Exeter asked the grace for the
social which followed for the afternoon tea
which was provided by Freda Boa,
Beatrice Munn, Laureta Riley and Phyllis
Parsons.
Bride -Elect honoured
An enjoyable evening was spent at the
Hensall Legion Hall when a number of
neighbours and friends assembled in
honour of Miss Darlene Uyl, bride -elect of
this week. Miss Julie McClinchey con-
ducted contests and read the address to the
bride. Misses Deanie McClinchey and Ven -
nese Stewart presented the gifts. Miss Uyl
made a fitting reply thanking everyone for
the beautiful gifts.
The shower was arranged by Mrs.
Clarence Reid, Mrs. I. Ferris and Mrs. Mc-
Clinchey.
The bride -elect; Miss Uyl, was also
honoured with a shower from relatives at
the home of her aunt and uncle Mr. and
Mrs. Arend Kikkert, RR2 Zurich.

UCW meet
The Christmas meeting of Unit IV was
held at the Hensall United Church on
December 3rd with 16 members and one
visitor present.
Mrs. Nan Britton presided for the
meeting and opened with a Christmas
poem, followed by the singing of a carol.
Mrs. Hazel Luther was in charge of the
devotional, reading a poem dealing with
the real meaning of Christmas. She then
read several passages from the second
chapter of Matthew and closed with
prayer.
The minutes of the last meeting were
read and adopted. Mrs. Dorothy Mickle
was secretary for the meeting and Mrs.
Susan Purdy was hostess. Mrs. Myrtle
Sherritt, treasurer, gave a splendid report
of the group for the year. Mrs. Mary
Roobol, card convener, reported the cards
sent out for thivast month.
The group was reminded about the
general meeting Monday evening,
December 7 at 8 p.m., to be held in the
auditorium of the church. Mrs. Shirley
Luther gave a lovely Christmas message,
speaking of the Shepherds going to
Bethlehem where Jesus was born and the
wonderful work of Jesus while He was on
earth.
