ARCA has
new book
about fossils
The Ausable-Bayfield Con-
servation Authority has just
finished distributing com-
plimentary copies of a book
to all schools and librarians
in its area of jurisdiction.
The book is a novel for
children entitled "Search for
the Secret Fossil" and is
written by Jean Davies
Wright. The Conservation
Authority published the book
earlier this year with finan-
cial assistance from the On-
tario Petroleum Institute.
The book has been
distributed to area schools
and libraries because the
'Conservation Authority
hopes that the story will con-
tribute to an awareness and
appreciation of the fossil
resources of the Arkona -
Rock Glen - Thedford area,
which is also the setting for
the book.
The book's author, Jean
Davies Wright, is a•
remarkable grandmother of
nine who returned to univer-
sity in her 50's and earned
first. a Bachelor's degree in
geology and later a Masters
of Science degree. Mrs.
Wright, who lives in
Michigan during the winter
months, has spent her sum-
mers since 1936 at a cottage
near Grand' Bend. She began
collecting fossils along the
ausable River and became
fascinated with her hobby.
Eventually she turned her
collection of fossils over to
the University of Michigan
and became a Research Col-
laborator at the Museum of
Paleontology, University of
Michigan.
In the book, a young boy
Peter joins his scientist
grandfather in the search for
a new previously unrecorded
fossil. The reader shares in
Peter's sense of discovery as
the fascinating world of
fossil hunting is revealed
through the pages of the
book.
Copies of "Search for the
Secret Fossil" are available
from the Ausable-Bayfield
Conservation Authority's of-
fice on Thames Road West in
Exeter. Hardcover copies
are $8.50 while softcover
copies cost $6.
The book would make an
excellent Christmas gift for
children in the 9-13 years age
bracket. For more informa-
tion call 235-2610.

Pine River
re -built
LUCKNOW - The board of
directors of the Pine River
Cheese Co-operative have
decided to rebuild the fac-
tory, store and warehouse,
which was destroyed in a fire
on October26th.
Glenn Martin, manager of
the Pine River Cheese Co-
operative, said the board will
be meeting soon to make a
decision on two alternatives,
to build on the same location
or to rebuild on property
facing Highway 21.
Pine River Cheese will be
available from a temporary
store set up across the road
from the former location
Martin anticipates that
cheese will be available after
the first week in December.
Approximately 300,000
pounds of cheese were
destroyed in the $1 million
fire which gutted the
warehouse, offices and
laboratory of the factory.

Legin ladies enjoy new kitchen
By John Scott
We shall start this weeks
column with the important
item of the week. Last week
Steve Cooke made a tragic
error which, as usually hap-
pens, upset many, many peo-
ple.
In particular, Steve
Maguire felt the pain most.
The kitchen is totally com-
pleted, fully operational and
not just functional as was er-
roneously reported!
I hope Steve does not try to
pass the blame on this one,
especially on to me. Who
knows what kind of stories
he will tell about me now. I
can only say that if you hear
any stories, you will know
who started them and why.
Another renovation pro-
ject which has recentl t l een
completed is the telephone.
As you may be aware, the
telephone was temporarily
out of order. As Harold
Black will testify, it is now
fully operational.
For all the wives of the
workers and the husbands of
the auxiliary workers, the
number is 482-9061.
This weeks special on
building material is plywood
flooring (No Steve, it's not
for the kitchen floor) the nor-
mal price is $21, but while
supplies last, they can be
purchased for $15.
While we are discussing
bargains and value for.
The trick is to be nice to
people until you're rich -
then people will be nice to
you.
money, this would be a good
time to mention 1982
membership dues. Ordinary
and associate membership is
$15 and affiliate membership
is $20. With all these prices
listed, the News -Record may
just put us out as an adver-
tising supplement. Another
good deal is our New Years
Dance. The cost is only $25
per couple. Entertaining us
will be New Dimensions.
Tickets are still available at
the bar.
Also still available at the
bar are Christmas . draw
tickets. The cost is only 25
cents. Our party • is on
December 19, so buy your
tickets and come along to see
your ticket drawn and col-
lect your prize.
Tomorrow night (Friday)
there is another pub night at
the branch. Come on down
and have some fun.
If you thought Stan and
Doris administered to your
needs before, you can now
feel even more relaxed now.
Dr. Stan and Dr. Doris com-
pleted a required four-day
course in first aid and passed
with flying bandages. You
may now need a prescription
to get those beverages, you
were only taking ' for
medicinal purposes anyway.
They were both issued with
pins and we congratulate
them.
