Varna this week By Mary Chessell Things seem to be unusually quiet in the Varna area lately, or I haven't heard about happenings until they are nolonger news. One small item doesn't make a col- umn, either. So this is catch-up week. Nora Heard has purchased Vi Bell's house in Bayfield and will be moving in mid-December. We'll hope to see her back in Varna frequently. Mervyn and Margaret Hayter have a beautiful, dark- haired baby granddaughter, Meghan Lois, born to Glen and Lois on November 13 in Stratford Hospital. A couple of weeks ago, a grain bin holding 50 tons of corn collapsed on top of the dryer at Bev Hill's. For- tunately, no one was injured. Jerry Reid, who has been fishing with Ed Siddall on Lake Erie for several weeks, is home again. They were able to fill their quota for pickerel on Lake Erie. Cottontails and partridge are plentiful in the area this fall. Our family has had good luck on their occa- sional Saturday hunts. There are lots of signs of a large deer population, too. The annual ,U.C.W. Christmas party is this Thursday, featuring a potluck supper and special pro- gram. White Gift Sunday will be observed this week with money gifts for the South Huron Association for the Mentally Retarded. Wiebe and Jenny Postma had a very enjoyable din- ner party on Saturday evening to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They held it in the township hall in Varna. Over 70 friends and relatives were present from Sarnia, Chatham, Blenheim, Ridgetown, St. Thomas and this area. They have raised five children, four girls and a boy. We'd like to add our congratula- tions on this happy occasion. Nellie Van Ninhuys of Goderich Township (left) returned to Holland this October after 32 years, Her three week stay was spent renewing old acquaintances, touring the homeland and visiting with family. Mrs. Van Ninhuys' and her one older sister, Ann Smits spent many happy hours together. BAYFIELD C by Helen Owen PljgLE Around and about the village Friends of Mrs. Marie Watson of Bayfieldwere concerned to learn that she was admitted to hospital in London on Monday last. Emergency surgery was carried out and the latest report on her condition in- dicates that she . is now showing signs of im- provement. • The first announcement of her indisposition was made at the meeting of the Bayfield Historical Society on Monday evening. Mrs. Watson has been a firm supporter of the Society for many years as well as having acted as secretary. .Ain't wot they used to be! By Helen Owen At the conclusion of the Bayfield Historical meeting last Monday night last, Mr. Marc Chalut read out the terms of an old contract between an employee and employer as laid down in the 1930's. , With labour unions becoming more aril more insistent with their claims for better working conditions, and terms of employinent, and frequent television presentations of workers demonstrating in . order to enlist -public sympathy for their injustices, it doesn't hurt to look back and realize what progress has been made in the last fifty years. The contract stated: "The employee vitas required to work nine hours daily (from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., sixtilays per week." "Overtime would be worked at the request of the employer.although there was no mention of overtime or overtime rates, so presumably no extra pay was. involved. However in mitigation it was stated that if the overtime was con- sidered to be excessive (presumably by the em- ployer) then it might be arranged for the employee th be giyeiik a half, or even, a whole day off on a Saturday. It was also noted that there might be occasions when the employee would be required to work on Sundays." "I'm innocent officer" ff ir There was a touch of Agatha Christie in the Post Office in Bayfield this week! This popular rendez-vous of Bayfield residents was the scene of a minor police in- terrogation when a group of innocents, collecting their mail, were suddenly con- fronted by a member of the OPP.. It seems that he was driving along Main Street, and spotted a particular car outside the Post Office. It corresponded with the description of one which had been seen during the course of a robbery in Kippen. Without a moment's hesitation, the driver en- tered the Post Office, demanding to know the owner of the vehicle. But, alas, his vigilance was unrewarded, for the owner proved tobe a Reverend gentleman of immaculate character! K -decorating. your home and ()mmerc tal decorating Centre.
