Fred
in bad shape
Apart from the increasing
cold there was no doubt that
Fred was feeling very
unhappy. His whiskers
drooped and he had a
general air of desolation, so
unlike his usual perky self.
Even a wholemeal biscuit
seemed to have lost its usual
appeal. Cold as I felt myself I
could not pass him by
without enquiring about his
well being. He sighed and his
tail fluttered restlessly.
"I wish I could hibernate,"
he said sadly in the tone off
one contemplating suicide.
"Here have 1 been, up to my
eyes in all these conferences
with animals and birds - and
of course, it's just like peopPe
- you don't get anywhere4f
one lot agrees with an idea,
the other lot opposes it, not
because they disagree with
the idea but it's a matter of
principle that they should
disagree with each other!" I
sympathized. I knew the
feeling.
"But," I interjected, "you
did say that by the time the
conference was over most of
the delegates would either
have departed, gone into
hibernation, or become
solely concerned with sur-
vival through the winter."
Frednodded.
"That's true. No, I'M not
really so bothered about all
that, tho' it did make a lot of
work, and it's a strain being
polite to animals you don't
like, and who don't like you.
No, I've got another
problem, and this one's
nearer home. Right on the
tree branch as you might
say..,
"Tell 'me about it,," I
encouraged him.
"Sometimes just talking to
someone else outside does
help." Fred glanced around'
him surreptitiously, as if he
was afriad ' of being
overheard.
"It's Freda," he
whispered. . I waited
anxiously for more, pon-
dering as to whether lady
squirrels were unfaithful -
or, maybe she was -ill. It was
the wrong time of year for
being pregnant. Fred having
reassured himself that we
were quite alone resumed his
story.
"While I was so busy, she
chanced on a local
newspaper, and there was an
article about being married .
and having a career.
- "I suppose it's something
on the lines of Women's Lib
stuff that one hears about.
Anyway, she suddenly got it
into her head that anything I
could do, she could do too!
Just imagine that - absolute
nonsense, of course. Next
thing I know she's collecting
nuts and scratching her
name on them, and I'm not to
have a teeny, weeny nibble. I
have to get my own." Fred's
indignation was becoming
more and more apparent.
"Funny thing," I said,
"when I. saw her the other
day she seemed to have lost
some fur on one side of her
face..." For a moment Fred
looked sheepish - or
whatever squirrels look
when they look that way.
"I'm agriad I lost my
temper - and belted her one:
But, golly in my fathers day,
my mother would no more
have dared to come up with
such nonsense as she would
consider living in the Lake.
Anyway, next thing madam
had worked out a 'sharing
schedule". We are to look
after the children three days
a week each, and on the odd
day employ a squirrel sitter -
a squirrel sitter - did ever
you hear such nonsense in
your life' ..
"I shouldn't worry too
much," I tried to console
him. "The colder it gets the
Less she'll be concerned with
such things. You'll see. And I
bet if she hasn't enough nuts
in her store. she'll have tc'
carne to you for some. and
you won't refuse."
"Don't count on 't
