Mail early, postage costs will double by January It might be wise to take care of two birds with one stone and mail both this and next year's Christmas cards before the start of the new year because, as of Jan. 1, new rates for first, third and fourth class mail take effect, which will double the cost of sending Christmas greetings through the mail. The new rates for second class mail will take effect next April. The cost of sending a seal- ed Christmas card (third class) will remain at 15 cents until the new year when it will rise to 30 cents. That's what it will cost to send a card next Christmas. Christmas cards bound for Canada and the United States must be sealed. The following are the deadlines for letters (including sealed Christmas cards) and parcels bound for destinations overseas. Letters and cards: Nov. 28 - Haiti and Neth., Antilles, Cuba; Dec. 5 - Europe, Argentina and Paraguay, Central and South America (excluding Cuba) and West Indies, Africa, Asia, Oceania (including Australia and New Zealand) ; Dec. 12 - Great Britain and N. Ireland, Republic of Ireland. Parcel post (by air); Nov. 21- Haiti and Neth., Antilles, Cuba, Africa, Asia, Oceania (including Australia and New Zealand); Nov. 28 - Europe, Argentina and Paraguay, Central and South America (excluding Cuba) and West Indies; Dec. 5 - Great Britain and N. Ireland, Republic of Ireland. The deadline for letters and cards bound for Cana- dian forces in Europe, Cyprus and the Middle East is Dec. 5 and Great Britain, Dec. 12. The deadlines for parcels to Canadian Forces overseas sent by air (surface deadlines in brackets are: Great Britain, Dec. 5 (Nov. 7); Europe.
