cessfully with 14 to 16 hours
of artificial light daily.
For light gardens, Flem-
ing recommends fluorescent
lamps instead of conven-
tional incandescent bulbs.
Fluorescent lamps are more
economical because they
provide more illumination
per watt of electricity used.
Most fluorescent lamps
provide a good spectrum of
light and are also cooler. than
incandescent bulbs. There is
a variety of fluorescent
lamps designed for plant
growing. However, cool,
light white tubes are
satisfactory for most home
gardeners, says Fleming.
"The better-known
houseplants, such as
philodendrons, African
violets, German ivy,
begonias, pothos and scin-
dapus will grow well under
artificial light," he says.
Lights should be set about
0.3 m (one foot) directly
above the plants for max-
imum light. Raise the light
as plants grow in height.

By this time all our
readers should be well
acquainted with the building
fund drive for our Clinton
Hospital.
Many fortunate ones may
never have had need of
hospital facilities, but there
are others who have been
hospitalized in Clinton and
were grateful they ,didn't
have to go miles away to a
strange place, plus making it
difficult for families and
friends to visit.
When the volunteer can-
vasser comes to your door
remember one of the
greatest needs of a com-
munity is the comforting
presence of a well staffed
hospital - and do respond to
the plea for funds.

Maybe all you know about
the "Universal Product
Code" is if you are a contest
bug and you have to clip one
off (or soak it off - or
whatever) to accompany
your entry form.
But if you are a con-
scientious and enterprising
housewife you could learn a
great deal about this new
form of pricing by attending
the next meeting of the
Clinton Women's Institue. on
Thursday, November , in
the Agricultural Bo rd
Rooms. The film is at 3 p h.
and the guest speaker will be
Huron County's Home
Economist, Jane Muegge,
her talk is entitled "The
Super Super Market". So if
you wish to learn more about
this universal product code
which to most housewives is
so mystifying plan to attend.
There is no admission
charge.

Presbyterian Church was
pleased to have as its guest,
Rev. Thomas A. Duke at the
recent meeting November 10

and an enlightening talk.
During the business
meeting it was decided to

Huron Day Care Centre.
Also, instead of the usual
exchange of gifts at its an-
nual Christmas pot luck
supper, club members
decided to donate the money
usually spent, to the Clinton
Hospital Building Fund
instead.
The pot luck supper will
take place this year on
December 8 at the home of
Mrs. Clara Macaulay.

Artificial light can
help your plants
Growing houseplants
under artificial light opens a
new world of gardening for
hobbyists, says Bob Flem-
ing, Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food hor-
ticulturist.
During the dull, short days
of winter, many houseplants
suffer from lack of natural
light, he says. Using ar-
tificial light, home
gardeners can maintain
plant growth.
Although artificial light is
no match for natural
sunlight, any common
houseplant will grow suc-

BEAVERS SCOUTS CUBS
Last Wednesday, November 11 the Beavers joined
the Cubs and Scouts for the Remembrance Day service
and parade. Beaver Darryl Lavis laid the wreath and
Jarrod Petteplace, Derek Hoggarth, Andrew Walker
and Jeff Ryan were the flag carriers. A special thank
you to the Legion Ladies Auxiliary for refreshments.
Thursday at the regular meetings it was an hour with
a special meaning revolving around the "Year of the
Disabled". Leader Rusty, along with Darryl Lavis and
Shane Carter, did a skit to try to encourage a disabled
boy to join the colony. Beavers were also encouraged to
use their senses as well as doing an obstacle course in a
wheelchair and another course while blindfolded.
Tic Tac introduced the Beavers to sign language and
Beavers were able to wish Andrew Walker a happy bir-
thday.
