Winter Trails •

set to go
Despite the uncertainty of
provincial funding the
Ausable-Bayfield ('on -
servation Authority will
operate a Winter Trails Pro-
gram this winter,.
The Conservation Authori-
ty has been operating a
Winter Trails Program since •
1978. The Program, involves
the maintenance by Authori-
ty staff of a variety of trails
in the Exeter, flay Swamp
and Parkhill areas. Trail
maintenance includes the
clearing of brush and
vegetation which has ac-
cumulated during the sum-
mer months, the installation
of proper trail signage, the
regular grooming • of the
trails, the. bridging of wet or
steep areas and the setting of
tracks on tht, cross-country
ski trails.
The I hay Swamp trail net-
work will consist. of a series
of snowmobile trails. This
year will also see the
development of a parking lot
for snowntobiler•s located on
Hay 'Township concession
!toad 4-5.
A cross country .ski trail
located between Exeter and
Morrison 1 )arn Conservation
Area, is again. planned for
,tris year. However this trail
not definite since
easements will need to be ob-
tained from private lan-
downers whose land the trail
crosses.
At Parkhill Conservation
Area both snowmobile and
cross-country ski trails will
be rnaintained.. A new sec-
tion of trail is planned along
the • southern edge of the
Parkhill Reservoir. In the
sununer this trail will link
the campground with the ex-
isting nature trails. In the •
winter the new trail will be
designated for cross-country
skiing.
The high point of the cross
country skiing and
snowmobiling season will
likely be the Parkhill Winter
Fun Day which has been
tentatively scheduled for
Sunday, February 7th. The
purpose of the winter fun day
is to promote participation in
winter recreational ac-
tivities and, •as the name
suggests, to have fun. The
program for the winter fun
day will include races. films,
ski waxing clinics, winter
survival clinics and refresh-
ments.
(yet ready
for spring
The grow ing season may
be over, hut there's still plen-
tj• of work to do in the
garden. says Muss Gornme,
Ontario 'Ministry of
Agriculture and Food hor-
ticulturist.
Annual flowers often
spread out during the stun -
mer, taking over the grass
around the flower beds. Use
a sharp spade to trim and re-
shape the edges of flower
anti shrub bens so they will
look their best next spring.
November is also the last
chance to protect tender
perennials from winter
damage. Hill up. roses by br-
inging the soil up around the
crown of the plant
Some home gardeners
may wish to use mulch to
protect their tender plants,"
says ( ranine. 'Soil. peat
moss. compost. or moderate
amounts of sawdust spread
around the plants will help
