Winless weekend
Stangs lose to Hawks
The Clinton Mustangs
dropped another game last
weekend to Walkerton Black
Hawks 7-5 after leading for
the first 50 minutes of the
game. The Mustangs' in-
consistent third period play
in the last few mes leaves
them all alone in third place
with four wins and three
losses and a tie. "
The Stangs opened the
scoring in the game last
Friday on a goal by Willy
Denomme-and then notched
another from Bill Peters
before the period ended
while the Black Hawks were
held scoreless.
Early in the second period,
the Stangs went up by three
when Larry Daer opened the
scoring, but Walkerton
bounced back with three fast
goals to tie the game.
Brian Horner gave the
Stangs a short lived lead
once again, but Walkerton
replied With one also and
then Jim Fritzley put the
local boys ahead in the last
minute of the period. The
score remained 5-4 in favor
of Clinton until the 15 minute
mark of the period and then
the Stangs collapsed and
Walkerton scored a pair
within two minutes to pull
ahead by one.
Clinton tried to pull the
goalie on a couple of oc-
casions but a penalty to one
of the Clinton players
nullified the manpower
advantage and when .re
Stangs did get the goaltender
to the bench, the move back-
fired and Walkerton put one
in the net tbend the game 7-
5.
The Mustangs play at
home Friday night against
the Hanover Barons at 8:30
p.m. and then on Sunday
they travel to Wingham for a
2 p.m. contest with the
Ironmen.
Huron's deer hunt
is successful despite
fewer hunters
The four-day controlled
deer hunt in Huron County
last week produced fewer
hunters, but a considerably
larger harvest of deer.
John Dobell, district
biologist at the ministry of
natural resources' Wingham
office, said 164 deer were
shot during the hunt in Huron
this year, compared to 103 a
year ago.
This was in spite of the fact

I've just received a new cookbook, hot off the press, 1
that deals with the cooking of wild game, that I think is
just great. I might be a little prejudiced, however,
since a few of my own recipes appear in the book, but
that only sways my judgment a bit. The real clincher is
that the 270 some odd recipesin the collection are the
favourites of 55 well known outdoor writers in Canada
and the U.S.
Who else could be able to tell you better how to cool
ruffed grouse than Frank Woolner, the great upland
bird specialist, or wild duck by Norm Strung or Zack
Taylor. Jim Zumbo describes a mouth-watering
technique for handling moosesteak, that will have
even the most fastidious eater coming back for more,
and Pat Madigan describes several ways of handling
fish to bring out the top flavours. Even Patrick
McManus contributes with some of that humour made
famous in "Field and Stream".
So what's this book all about? Savor the Wild is a new
cookbook edited by veteran outdoor writer and
photographer, Kay L. Richey, and has just been
published by Sportsman's Outdoor Enterprises, a
publisher of fine outdoor titles near Traverse City,
Michigan. Kay has pulled all these favourite recipes
from outdoor writers together, added some of her own
special techniques, and combined them in a 133 page
spiralbound book with a glossy cover. The book deo
with venison, rabbits, grouse, woodcock, ducks, geese,
moose, bear, bass, trout, and just about anything that
walks and swims in nature. It is divided into chapters
on cooking freshwater game fish, small and big game,
and gamebirds, with an interesting section on sauces
and batters. It also has a section with photos and short
biographies on the contributing authors, so you get a
chance to find out a little about them as well.
If there is a hunter or fisherman in your family, this
is one book that should be on your pantry shelf. Savor
The Wild will provide you with excellent methods to
deal with whatever finned or furry creature is brought
home in a simple, foolproof method. To get a copy,
send off a U.S. money order for $13 (covers postage and
handling as well) to Kay L. RI c -e, : s - -'2, Grawn,
MI, 49637. If you do it now, Kay will even aut r _ raph the
book for you. As an outdoor person myself, I c 't think
of a Christmas gift that would get any more use orbe
as cherished as much as an autographed copy.

Deer hunters, don't forget that your questionnaire
must be returned to the Ministry of Natural Resources,
whether you were Successful or not. If you have
misplaced the form, call the Wingham office to find out
what you must do. If you don't return the form, you will
not be allowed to enter the draw for next year's hunt.
And while I'm talking about the Ministry of Natural
Resources, please note this error on your hunting sum-
mary. The raccoon season closes on Dec. 31st, NOT on
Feb. 28th as printed. Every possible effort is being
made to let people know of this mistake, so there is no
excuse for taking coon after the season. Charges will
be laid, so be forewarned.

Remrnington is recalling some lots of ammunition
for the 7mm Express. If you own a rifle in this caliber,
keep an eye out in the major outdoor magazines for the
specific iot numbers in question. If you have some of
the recalled ammo, get in touch with Remmington, and
they will tell you how to return it for replacement.

however, how many of the
permits were used.
"The deer herd is in good
condition. We've had a
couple of good winters and
the numbers (the county's
deer population is estimated
at 1,200 - 1,500) are quite
high," Dobell said in ex-
plaining the increased
hunting success.
Deer reproduction has
been good in recent years,
Dobell added. He said this
was illustrated by the fact
that 35 per cent of the deer
shot this year were fawns,
compared to 26 per cent the
year before.
"All of the hunters
reported seeing a lotoaf deer,
many more than before:"
Dobell said good weather
conditions also helped to
boost hunter success this
year.
The kill might have even
been higher if there had not
been so much corn left
standing in the fields, which
provides excellent cover.
Despite the increased kill,
Dobell said it was well under
the acceptable limits for the
herd.
However, he said it is
unlikely there will be any
significant increase in the
number of hunters permitted
to take part in the hunt next
year.
"The deer herd could
handle it, but whether or not
landowners would is another
question."
There were only, a couple
of trespassing complaints
from landowners this year.
Two charges were
reported, both for hunters
without permits carrying
shot capable of killing deer.
