on TVO
"The Spirit of Blyth" looks
at how a small summer
theatre experiment became
an integral part of the year-
round life of a community,"
says People Patterns pro-
ducer Joan Reed -Olsen. The
program will be aired
Wednesday, November 11 at
9:30 p.m.
Through its theatre -cum -
cultural centre's offering of
workshops for children and
adults, its 80 member choral
group and its art gallery of
ever-changing exhibits, the
Blyth Festival has reached
out to touch every part of the
community.
When newspaperman
Keith Roulston and the
senior citizens of Blyth peti-
tioned the local council to
turn the 50 -year-old plus
community centre into a
cultural centre, little did
they know that the 500 seat
theatre that evolved would
one day attract people from
all over the province.
Co-founder Roulston and
artistic director Janet Amos,
who works as director, actor
and playwright, see the
Blyth Theatre as a spr-
ingboard for Canadian
plays. Amos and her actor -
husband Ted Johns, brought
to Blyth the Theatre Passe
Muraille approach of in-
digenous theatre. That is,
the cast and director live in,
study the community, then
develop the storyline and
script based on their
observations of events and
people. This summer three
pr ductions played to
cacity crowds throughout
their engagements.
"The Spirit of Blyth" looks
at the creation and produc-
tion of Festival 81's Fire and
Ice, directed by David Fox.
The program also in-
vestigates how the members
of ' this rural community
have developed an apprecia-
tion of theatre, and how they
respond to theatrical presen-
tations - based on often con-
troversial local history.
Travellers to perform in Blyth
With folk music regaining
some of its enormous
popularity of the 1960s and
early 1970s, with groups like
Peter, Paul and Mary
reuniting for sold -out con-
certs and television specials,
one of the folk groups than
never really went away W
bring its act to Blyth
Memorial Hall on Sunday,
November 15 at 2 p.m.
The Travellers have
performed all over Canada
and around the world, en-
tertaining Canadian troops
in the Middle East, per-
forming for the Emperor of
Japan, touring the Soviet
Union :as part of a cultural
exchange and appearing at
the London Palladium
during a tour of Britain.
They have " recorded 14
albums, appeared . on stage
and television with such
stars as Anne Murray,
Gordon Lightfoot, Judy
Collins, Joni Mitchell and
The Rovers and made
several television specials of
their own including one
recently completed for CBC
television.
It was back in the early
1950s that Jerry Gray fell
under the influence of the
legendary Pete Seeger and
they formed a friendship
that lastedmany years.
• Jerry formed the Travellers
and with other members of
the group, rewrote, in 1955,
the words of the Woodie
•Guthrie classic "This Land
is Your Land" to apply to
Canada. .
The Travellers have
designed their concert to
entertain all members of the
family. They can sing in
