H -P Lung group
begins Seal campaign
The Huron -Perth Lung
Association officially began
its Christmas Seal Campaign
on November 1 with the
mailing of Christmas Seals
to some 11,500 homes in the
Huron -Perth area.
Since 1927, lung
associations across Canada
have used the "Christmas
Seal" as their sole method of
raising funds — funds which
only a few years ago were
used to wipe out the
mysterious white prague -
tuberculosis.
Today over five million
Canadians suffer from other
lung disorders ranging from
the common cold to lung
cancer.
Edith Brothers of the
Huron -Perth Lung
Association reports' that,
"Lung diseases extract a
staggering sum from
Canadian economy. The cost
of hospital treatment alone is
estimated at more than $400
million annually. Payments
to physicians, the cost of
drugs and other related
charges are estimated to
total another$100 million."
Respiratory diseases are
the greatest cause of ab-
senteeism from school and
work and the cause of, death
for more than 19,459
Canadians in 1979, the most
recent year for which figures
are available.
Last year $50,000 was
raised . in Huron and Perth
counties. A small portion of
this was senttothe Canadian
Lung Association for
national programs and the
remainder stayed in this
area These funds enable the
Huron -Perth Lung
Association to carry out the
many preventative
programs in an effort to
control lung disease.
The Christmas ' Seal
Campaign for 1981-1982
holiday season will end on
January 31,1982.
There are some diversions in a sometimes long and boring vigil, as Clinton fire area chief
Clarence Neilans gets an unexpected hug from a costumed visitor Hallowe'en night.
Chief Neilans along with many of the other 20 volunteers were keeping watch. The
evening was quiet until 3 am when they were called out to a burning home owned by Hugh
Flynn. (James Fitzgerald photo)
Protest cards available
Counters in stores in the
Clinton area, as well as
many parts of Canada, are
distributing postcards that
can be mailed to Prime
Minister Trudeau, protesting
the high interest rates.
The card, which can be
mailed postage free, has
space on the back for the
user to sign and it reads: "I
wish to add my name to
those protesting the record
high interest rates.
"High interest rates fuel
rather than curb, inflation. At
the same time high interest
rates increase the .cost of
mortgages. They discourage
home building, deter in-
vestment, depress economic
.activity and cause unem-
ployment.
"Bring down interest rates
now!" the card concludes. paid for by the Ontario
The cards are sponsored and Federation of Labour.
Goderich finances
for sewage plant addition
GODERICH - When. the
pollution control plant was
built in 1965, it was expected
that it would serve
Goderich's needs for many
years. However in just over
10 years, the ministry of the
environment has instructed
the town to plan for further
expansion, that would nearly
double the cpacity of current
sewage treatment facilities.
Since 1977, the town has
been setting aside funds for
the inevitable expansion of
the sewage treatment plant
and by mid-November. the
PUC studies own delivery system
ST. MARYS - If it is legal,
the St. Marys PUC may start
delivering its own bills to
customers.
The commission has been
considering an alternative to
sending its bills through the
post office because of the
current high cost of mailing
and an anticipated cost in-
crease in January.
While the local postmaster
believes that this might be
illegal, it was noted that in
Kitchener many utility bills
have been delivered through
privately -contracted
couriers for at least two
years.
By using the postal service
it costs the St. Marys PUC
about $200 month to mail
customer bills. This will be
increased in January when it
is anticipated that the cost of
mailing a first-class letter
rises to 30 cents.

Factory burns
PINE RIVER - A roaring
inferno swallowed up the
Pine River Cheese Factory
on October 25th, leaving
nothing salvageable behind.
Located just west of High-
way 21 between Port Albert
and Kincardine, three fire
departments were called to
fight the late afternoon blaze
that burned long into the
night. Lucknow's assistant
chief later reported that fire
fighters couldn't get inside
the building to fight the
growing flames.
He said it was impossible
to enter the factory because
there were no windows or
doors on the central portion
where the fire broke. The
flames spread from the
cement block building into
the warehouse.
The fire marshal's office is
investigating the cause of the
disaster at the historic
factory, in business since
1885.

stitute for the Blind can pro-
vide further information on
