Holmesville
news
By Blanche Deeves
The men's choir sang at
Holmesville United Church
tea large congregation. The
autumn flowers in the
Sanctuary were beautiful.
Rev. Bechtel showed the
children a white sheet of
paper and told that God
knows when we do wrong. If
we talk to Jesus about it, he
makes us as clean as the
sheet of paper.
The minister spoke about
the great commission. Bill
Crawford and Alvin Betties
received the offering.

Conklin
crumbles
Conklin Home Centres, a
chain of 15 lumber and
building supply outlets in
Southwestern Ontario, in-
cluding one in Goderich, is in
receivership, a spokesman
for Coopers & Lybrand Ltd.
confirmed Tuesday.
The spokesman said the
Conklin firm has been in
receivership since last Fri-
day but refused to elaborate.
Calls to Conklin's head of-
fice at 199 Queens Ave. in
London are being referred to
Coopers & Lybrand,
chartered accountants and'
trustees in bankruptcy.
Conklin closed a number of
its outlets in Southwestern
Ontario recently, including
Ridgetown, Southampton,
Harrow and La Salle near
Windsor.
A company announcement
quoting president Brian
Davies earlier this year said
the former company-owned
store at Grand Bend had
opened as Conklin's first
franchise under owner -
manager Jim Karry.
"The name Conklin has
been associated with lumber
and building products in
Southwestern Ontario since
1885," the announcement
said.
"Today, with 15 company-
owned stores, Conklin is the
largest privately owned
building supply home centre
chain in Ontario."
Davies said the company
considered franchising an
important part of its expan-
sion and marketing strategy
for the '80s.
"We will be aggressively
looking for new franchise
dealers to broaden our base
and increase our market
share," the announcement
said. "We are extremely op-
timistic of opening several
more franchise stores in
Southwestern Ontario in the
/\,,
ear future."

It's a fact
Ground Swirling
Judging the danger of
tornado by the appearance
of a funnel cloud can b1
deadly. Research by twe
meterologists suggests tha
there is often a violent, swirl
ing vortex at ground leve
well before the funnel clout
touches down.
