Remembering the good old days LLSTOWEL - Ralph Keffer of RR 2, Bluevale found an old sale bill that makes yesteryears truly look like the good old days. Dating back to the early 1900's, the bill listed items from a Toronto shop and noted that 3,000 pounds of choice dairy butter were priced at 25 cents per pound while 200 pails of assorted jams were selling for 15 cents per pail. Canned goods included choice red salmon at 15 cents per tin, four tins of Born for 25 cents and six tins of sardines for 25 cents. Bread was 10 cents per baf and three pounds of split beans were advertised at 10 cents. In the meat line, green bacon was 17 cents per pound, while the finest back bacon listed at 16 cents per pound. Those were prices that no grocery store could compete with today. In a story in last week's special Harvest of Savings insert on the changes made to the town's business area, .1 & J Phar'tnacy was in- correctly called a variety store. The story also failed to menton that the Pro Har- dware Store under owner- ship of the Bill Smith family, had expanded into the next door store, formerly Anstett Jewellers, and that Mr. Smith had done new Tudor style renovation beside his sign.
