By Blanche Beeves
The Harvest Thanksgiving
Service was held last Sunday
in St. James Anglieat►,Mid-
dleton with the church
beautifully decorated in
flowers and vegetables and
fruits from the gardens of
the congregation.
Rev. George Youmatoff
made the Harvest Prayer
and the Doxology was said in
unison. Audrey Ntiddleton
read .the first • lesson. Ray
Wise read the second leason. ,
Following the announcement
James Storey, accompanied
by his mother Sarah Storey
at the organ sang a special
number and Ray " Wise and
Jferohn
ingDeeves received the of-
.
The UCW will hold their
October meeting at the home
of Jeanne Bennett in
Bayfield. Leader in charge
was Blanche Deeves.
From the Church
Wardens. It is right that once
a year all Christians should
pause to reflect and to thank
God for His rich blessing. In
Canada we should keep in
mind our abundant bless-
ings. Last Sunday provided
an opportunity to show our
thanks in a tangible way
from Ray Wise and Don Mid-
dleton.
The Harvest Festival is
one of the oldest rites of the
church. Age after age it has
been observed. In Canada it
comes in the Autumn season
when the chill is in the air
and the leaves begin to col-
our and fall.
Almost a century and a
half ago Henry Alford, later
Dean of. Canterbury
Cathedral wrote a hymn for
Harvest. He had been nine
years in his. first parish in
the countryside of Leicester-
shire. In the fall of 1844 it
was decided to hold a
celebration of thanksgiving
at the dose of a plentiful and •
abundant harvest.
The young Rector put his
own feelings into some verse
to be sung by his congrega-
tion. How astonished he
would have been if
somebody had told him that
these same stanzas would
have a lasting appeal for
church worshippers
throughout the English
speaking world! So ap-
propriate and popular is
their use as a thanksgiving
hymn that Dean Alford's
"Come Ye Thankful People
Come' affords as much
delight to us today as when
they were first sung by that
small rural congregation so
long ago.

Media compa a
planned for
Private Property
week
Plans for a media cam-
paign to celebrate Private
Property Week in Huron
County were 'announced
today by Paul Zurbrigg,
President of the Huron Real
Estate Board.
The week-long celebration,
being held October 4-10, 1981,
throughout Ontario is
sponsored by the Ontario
Real Estate Association and
its 48 member real estate
boards.
Operating under the theme
"Preserving the Spirit of Our
Land", Private Property
Week is designed to reaffirm
the rights of Canadians to
own, use, and enjoy private
property. "Those rights are
slowly drifting away,"
commented Zurbrigg," and
ordinary citizens are losing
rights without even being
aware of it."
Our Canadian heritage of
rights and freedoms is a vital
concern, Zurbrigg added.
"We invite all the citizens of
Huron County to join with us
in our activities and our
celebration of our basic
rights."
