Zurich's
weekly
newspaper
closes
The Zurich Citizens News
is dead at age 20.
Theweekly newspaper
with a circulation of about
600 last hit Zurich streets
last Thursday. Founded by
local businessman Herb
Turkheirn, it was acquired
about five years ago by J.W.
Eedy Publications of St.
Marys.
Lorne Eedy, president of
the firm, said Monday the
company had been losing
money on the paper for
some time because of declin-
ing circulation.
"There was only marginal
support from most people,"
he said. Former subscribers
will now receive the weekly
Exeter Times -Advocate,
also owned by Eedy Publica-
tions. That 6,000 -circulation
paper will continue to cover
Zurich news, Eedy said, and
he expected coverage might
actually improve. The two
staffers at the Zurich paper
will be incorporated into the
Exeter weekly, he said.
Eedy said the year-end
loss on the Citizens News
"was in the small
thousands" but he said he
didn't think the situation in
Zurich could be salvaged.
Eedy Publications has
about 50,000 readers, Eedy
said. The firm produces the
weekly St. Marys Journa-
Argus, the Exeter paper and
two new farm -oriented
papers that are published
every two weeks, the Perth -
Oxford Farm Update and the
Huron -Middlesex Farm Up-
date.
