Local branchparticipates in tourne ` NOTICEQFPUBLICMEETINGi golf tourneys By John Scott Well, Blanche beeves finally caught up to me last week and gave me another earful. She told me how fed up she was with all the golf she was reading about in Legion news. • So we will start this week's column with, what else, golf news. On Saturday, were were represented at the Provincial Championships in Blenheim by Alan Penrtie, Don Armstrong, Cliff Saundercock and John Scott, but unfortlinately, our branch ;kill not be represented at the Dominion Finals. On Sunday, the Legion fall tournament was held at Bayview Golf Club when 49 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day of golf weatherwise. Tim West shot a 70 to win the low gross prize, while Alan Pennie was the low gross Legion member with a 75, and Murray Taylor took low net with a 71. Laurie Colquhoun won the prize for closest to the pin on the 12th hole. We would like to thank Ball-MacAuley Ltd., Doug Bartliff, Campbell's Men's Wear and Home Hardware for their donations to the prize table. Blanche Deeves, despite au she has said, dropped in to make sure everything was organized. Happy 4th Anniversary Linda and Jim Fehr love - Leonard. On September 9th, a poppy and public relations meeting was held at the Goderich branch. The meeting was chaired by zone poppy chairman , Harold Black of Clinton and Steve Maguire was acting secretary, replacing George Campbell who could not be in at- tendance. ttendance. Our branch was further represented by Gord Tait, John Deeves and John Scott. Poppy tag day has been set for November 7, 1981. A zone sports meeting has been set for September 16, 1'•11 at 8 in the Goderich Branch. A service bureau meeting has been scheduled for Howick branch on October 28, at 8 p.m. I have been told by some of our older, knowledgeable members that if you want to know what the Legion is all about, this is the meeting to attend. Two drumhead services were held in our area recently. John Deeves, George and Lil Campbell were present at Howick's service on September 6, while George Rumball, John Deeves and George and Lir Campbell along with a contingent from .our pipe band attended the service in Brussels on September 13, 1981. The C-1 zone convention will be held in Seaforth on September 27. Everyone is invited to attend, The parade is scheduled for 13:30 with the meeting to follow. Milt 'Schreiber, one of our most active members, celebrated his 71st irthday last Thursday. According to Mable, he doesn't act his age, but she is not com- plaining. The Ladies Auxiliary have some sporting events coming up. September 23, at Kin- cardine is the zone euchre tournament, while zone cribbage will be held in Blyth on October 28. The second prize of a canister set was won by Keith MacKinnon of Port Parry. Keith is Minlue's grandson. John Lawson ran inthe run. for Terry Fox on Sunday,, and he completed the 10 kilometre run (6 miles) in•74 minutes. Pledges totalling almost $500 will go towards cancer research. I saw John at the branch on Saturday night and he said he was in training. John deserves congratulations for his ef- forts. This epitomizes the spirit of the Legion, not only in John's run but the members who pledged their support. The Harvest Dance is coming up in October. Tickets will be available at all the usual outlets. I am not the best ticket seller in the world, so if you want a couple of tickets just give me a call.
