Hugh Campbell teachers meet
Yesterdays and todays
were the main topics of
conversation at the Garnet
and Phyllis Harland home,
RR 5, Clinton on August 19th
when more than 20 teachers
from the old Hugh Campbell
Public School were reunited.
Mr. Garland, a former
teacher and principal at the
Canadian Forces Base
School, now Vanastra Public
School and Conestoga
College, hosted the reunion,
the first one in 10 years.
Teachers came from
Clinton, Petrolia, Chatham,
Trenton, Blyth, Varna and
Seaforth and according to
Carol Simons of Varna, "We
really enjoyed the event."
There is a full list of all the
teachers at the school, with
current addresses, and Mrs.
Simons said, "We hope to.
hold and bigger reunion in
the future."
The school's history
In September, 1948 the
Hugh Campbell School was
opened at the RCAF Station
in Clinton for the children of
the five families living there.
In 1949, 26 pupils were
enrolled and by 1950 the
enrollment had risen to 90
pupils with the opening of the
Public Married Quarters.
Mr. C.A. Trott of Seaforh
was the principal and he and
Miss Clara Clarke of
Bayfield had junior and
seniors classes, while Mrs.
Chambers taught the in-
termediate grades.
By September 1951, the
Hugh Campbell School had
been built and enrollment
was up to 130 pupils. As the
RCAF Station grew, so did
the number of pupils andtop
enrolment was 450 students.
The children came from all
parts of the world and made
up an extraordinary school.
The Station closed in 1971
and the school was closed at
that time. Today the white -
sided uilding is home to the
Vanastra Public School and
the Clinton campus of
Conestoga College. Inside
