Local boy roars to the top in
motocross action national
By Jim Fitzgerald
From a humble start one a year ago,
Sean Van Dongen 15, of RR 3, Clinton has
risen quickly to become the cream of the
crop of not only area motocross, but of the
Canadian scene.
Sean, son of Tony Van Dongen, recently
became the first ever Huron County boy to
become a Canadian champ, when he won
the National. 100 cc motocross cham-
pionship in Calgary on August 17.
Sean, who just started racing at Hully
Gully in Varna a year ago, in June of 1980,
won the two-day Calgary event, defeating
25 other highly skilled riders from the rest
of Canada on a $700 bike bought at Varna.
He also had a spare bike along.
Another Clinton lad, Randy Marriage,
finished 10th in the smaller, 80 cc class at
Calgary after developing bike trouble.
Sean is also the point leader at Hully
Gully and heads all Ontario drivers in his
class. As well, he his third in current
standings in Michigan, a real hot -bed of
motocross racing, which features skill
testing off-road hills, sharp turns, and
heart stopping jumps.
As well Sean, always accompanied to the
events by his dad, has raced in Ohio, North
Carolina,,and Kentucky.
But.all this travelling is expensive, and
Tony says that if it wasn't for their
sponsors, Hully Gully and Fleming Feed
Mills of Clinton, their success would have
been limited.
"One of the big reasons for Sean's win at
Calgary was the perfect condition of the
bike, which was made mechanically sound
by Wayne Ryerson of Vanastra. He did
just a super job," Tony said.
With a 12 -foot mantle fullof trophies at
titer Goderich Township farm, the Van
Dongens have no intentions of stopping
racing, and hope lady luck helps them to a
few more wins.
