Love or Money, a play -of riddles and mystery By Shelley McPhee A.Is Ambrose Small dead, or did he disappear to a tropical haven with one of his chorus line girlfriends? Could his wife have killed him, his associate, or his girlfriend? What does the housekeeper Mrs. Pye really know, and why was possible murder committed for love or money? The Blyth Summer Festival's second production this season Love Or Money is a play of riddles, offering audiences a number of possible options, alter- natives, twists and turns in this suspense comedy. Love Or Money takes a fictional look at the true disappearance of Ambrose Small. A Toronto threatre magnate, Small sold his Grand Theatre chain for $1,700,000 on a cold winter day in December 1919. At 11:45 on the morning of that day, December 2, his wife Therese deposited a cheque for $1,000,000 into the Dominion Bank. At 5:30 that same day Ambrose Small mysteriously vanished from the face of the earth, never to be found, seen, or heard of again. Playwright Carol Bolt has taken this true mystery and offered audiences a lighthearted variety of conclusions to this yet un- solved tale. She gives us a choice of love or money as the main cause for Small's mysterious disappearance, offers three possible murder suspects, and a dash of the supernatural and strong emotional desires just to cover all angles. Impressions are made, and suggestions are given, but as the curtain drops at the final scene, Bolt cleverly leaves the audience to figure out the riddles, the puzzles, the facts and the fiction for themselves. • While Love Or Money itself leaves .the, audiences in thought," there is little doubt that the performances by the play's five cast members are top quality. Anne Anglin, playing the housekeeper Mrs. Pye, of- fers the top" permformance in the production. Her comic character stands out as the knowing housekeeper, who seems to possess strange powers 'and better -than - average intuition. Summer Festival newcomers Graham McPherson, as Ambrose Small's associate with questionable intentions, and Patricia Vanstone, as one of Small's actress girlfriends, both carry off convincing performances in this tale of suspense. Diana Belshaw, a Summer Festival veteran, best remembered for her role in P11 Be Back For You Before Midnight again wins the audiences' hearts through her portrayal as the distressed Mrs. Small and Layne Coleman, another familiar face around Blyth, puts out his usual top quality performance as the up- standing, thoughtful, yawait,iftU Le1CI:I.ive Austin Mitchell of the Toronto Police Department. The leisurely, rich life of The late 1900's before the depression days is mar- vellously brought back to life through the attractive sets and lavish costumes by Tony Adams. John Roby offers some spine chilling sound effects and Louise Guinand gives the dimly lit effects that make suspense stories, thrilling and spooky. Love Or Money is a crafty tale that's bound to arose new interest in the strange story and the riddles surrounding that day in December when Ambrose Small went away. Love Or Money will play at the Blyth Summer Festival on July '16,17, 22, 23 (a t 2 pm 25, 30 and 31. It may also be seen on August 11 and 20.
