VANASTRA the C By Rhonda Bjerg 4) voice Students receive awards Vanastra Public School is now closed for the summer, and school opens again the morning of September 8, 1981. Awards Day at the school was held on Tuesday, June 23rd, when two awards were presented by the Vanastra and District Lioness Club. Most improved student was Darlene Smith and best all round- `student was Liana Cheverie. The following are the award winners from Canada Fitness: Excellence, Shelly Bonte-Gelok, Heather Brownridge, Darryl Dixon, Derek Dixon, Terri Evans, Ronnie Govier, Paul Handy, Alison Jeacock, Paula Jeacock, Shaun Kyle, Tom Kyle, Susan Lehner, Shelley Maxwell, Ken McIlveen, Scott Mellor, Colin Thomas. Badges, were. given to 14 members in the French club; 22 in cross country; 15 in girls' volleyball; 13 'in boys' bordenball; 24 in girls' softball; 16 in boys' volleyball; 20 in girls' bordenball; and 21 in the choir. On June 24th in Exeter and June 25th in Wingham, teachers, board members, various professionals and in- terested parents spent an in- teresting and informative day with Dr. Foster Cline, who spoke on "Today's Troubled -Disruptive Stu- dent". Nursery kids enjoy clown cake Everyone at the Tuckersmith Day Nursery want to express their thanks and appreciation to Kevin Taylor and his mom for the beautiful clown cake and plants they received. Also thank you Kevin for the nice pictures he did so well in drawing of the teachers. It was his last day. The children will be star- ting swim lessons every Tuesday and Thursday mor- nings shortly and are looking forward to that. Miss Swan is on holidays in Florida for two weeks. CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, JULY 2 , 1981—PAGE 15 Scotland fold visit in the Hensall area By Bertha MacGregor Mr. and Mrs. Willison MacKay of Stromness, Scotland spent last week visiting with the former's cousins in London and Hensall. On Wednesday evening 22 relatives were entertained with dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Stretton of Hensall. Mr. MacKay is a cousin of Norma Stretton, Minnie Noakes, Jim Sangster, and John Sangster of Herman. Mrs. Margaret MacFarlane, and Mrs. Marion Peebles of London a7Re also cousins. This is the first time the MacKay's have visited Canada and are very im- pressed with the vastness and beauty of our country. On Thursday Mr. and Mrs. Stretton and daughters, Susan and Barbara motored to Niagara Falls, the latter were very impressed with the grandeur of the Falls, and also visited the Lions host good tourney The Vanastra and District Lions Club bad their second annual ball tournament over the weekend. It turned out to be very successful, with the exception of waldng up muscles that haven't been used lately. The Lions had a food booth open to all. Results are as follows: Friday, June 26th: Vanastra 16 - Seaforth 17; Londesboro 6, Auburn 5. Saturday, June 27th: Drumbo 26, St. Marys 4; Vanastra 3, Drumbo 33; Seaforth 21, St. Marys 15; Vanastra 8, St. Marys 17; Zurich 8, Ingersoll 25; Zurich 18, Londesboro 6; Ingersoll 7, Auburn 5; Londesboro 0, Ingersoll 20. Sunday, June 28th: Seaforth 11, Drumbo 37; Auburn 27, Zurich 4. "B" Champions: Auburn 20, Seaforth 12; "A" Cham- pions: Drumbo 12, Ingersoll 3. Drumbo and Auburn received trophies and beer steins, and a thank you to all the clubs participating this weekend. Special thanks to the Lions' wives who helped out in the food booth - Diane Ryan, June Jeacock, Linda Dixon, Sandy McLachlin, Meryl Thomas and Myrtle Goulding. A big thank you to Sandy McLachlin's sister Debbie McNichol, who babysat all the kids on Saturday during the games. Christian Church Marg Ridder was the organist on Sunday at the Vanastra Christian Church. Next Sunday, the church is in charge of the Park service at Point Farms, at 11:30 a.m., right after their own morning service. It is held in The Barn. On July 26th, the Church is also in charge at Point Farms again. The sug- gestion is that the congrega- tion go there instead of the regular service and have a picnic lunch afterwards. Last Friday evening, the Church` welcomed the S.W.I.M. Team . (Summer Worship in Missions) with a potluck supper, barbecue and program afterwards. All hada good time, and all look forward to work, worship and fellowship for the next six weeks. The Team is from Niagara League of Y.P. Their names are Annette Van Spronsen, Joyce Van Geest, Ron DeRuyter, Steve Kauwenhaven and Liz Steenberg. Thank you to all the people who helped out to set up–the S.W.I.M. Team this year in the apartments. A special word of thanks to Bruce Linton, who has helped out so much to make the apartment comfortable and livable. The potluck sup- per also turned out so well thanks to everyone who helped out and came to share this occasion. Also, here Bruce did a super job to make all the arrangements with help and suggestions from Rev. Mantel. Vacation Bible School will hold its final meeting for last minute preparations on Thursday, July 2nd at 8:00 p.m. in the church. All teachers and helpers are asked to be present. V.B.S. will start Monday, July 6th at '9:00 a.m. A hayride through the community is planned for Saturday, July 4th at 7:00 p.m. Children can go to the church or hop on the wagons as they go along. Agricrew at work • from page 13 At present, five of the eight weeks are pretty well booked up for all three crews but more work is needed for the final three weeks. For a reasonable price farmers receive eight hour of work by four enthusiastic crewmembers. Shakespearean Theatre in Stratford. Mr. MacKay is Captain of a ship which is based in Scotland. Rental Public Graduation On Monday evening, June 22, the Grade 8 Class at Hensall Public School was honored with a banquet at the Pine Ridge: Chalet. Parents, teachers and the graduates attended the ceremony which featured special acadeouic award- s.Representing the Kinette Club of Hensall and District, Mrs. Carolyn Knight presented the Kinette Scholarship Award to Pam Cottrell and David Skea who were the top girl and boy students in Grade 8. Pam Cottrell also received a Mathematics Award presented on behalf of the Raeburn family by Mr. Robert Raeburn, the school principal. David Skea was awarded an English award and this was presented to him by Mr. Ross Dobson on behalf of the K-40 Club of Hensall and District. Two other awards Community news Baseball The Bantam girls put up a good fight against Colborne and were winning until the 5th inning - the game only went to the 5th inning or they might have had a chance. Representing the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Hensall Lodge. Mr. Eric ,Mansfield presented a Citizenship Award to Cheryl Webber. The special awards were mint sets which the students should appreciate over the years. This year's. Grade 8 Class had 11 students and they were all presented with graduation diplomas by Mr. Doug Pearson and Mr. Eric Mansfield Special thanks should go to Mrs. Jane Hnatyk who helped the students decorate the dining room for this special oc- casion and to the other staff members who helped at the banquet, Mrs. Mary Jacob, Mts.
