(Jing Fitzgerald photo) Kippen UCW look at health by Rena Caldwell The Kippen UCW met June 16 with 17 members and one guest. Mrs. Robert Turner was in charge of the worship. She began by reading holidays become Holy Days and the offering was taken by the hostess, Mrs. Bill Con- sitt which was dedicated by Mrs. Turner. Mrs. Lloyd Lostell, in charge of the topic, introduc- ed the guest speaker Madeline Rosky, a health nurse with Stanley Township and Zurich. •Slides were shown on "Public Health i1s� Everybody's' Business". She emphasized some facets of her work which included help with senior citizens. . Mrs. Kinsman opened the business portion with the flower growers Psalm and roll, call was answered by contributing ani item for the auction at theend of the meeting. Reports were given by Mrs. Bert Faber on finances and correspondence and Mrs. Bill Consitt, the Sun- shine Report. The bale was packed and sent to Zurich for the Mennonite Relief bake sale on July 4 at Homestead near Bayfield. There will be a Fall Supper on November 11 at Brucefield Church and Bible School will be held at Brucefield from July 6-10. Kippen ladies help Monday and . Wednesday. Mrs. Harold Jones gave the courtesy remarks. Lunch was served by the hostesses, .Mrs. Hank Bin- nendyk and Mrs. Bill Con- sitt. The Kippen East W.I. met at the home of Mrs. William McDowell on June 17 with -Mrs. Ronald McGregor as guest speaker. Mrs. McGregor, who teaches at. Huron Hope School was in- troduced by Mrs. Robert Kinsman and thanked by Mrs. William Bell. Mrs. McGregor showed slides of her pupils at their routine school work and said that early diagnosis was im- portant, also she said that since German Measles in a pregnant woman was one of the causes of retardation it was wise to have all girls vaccinated. This was the. education meeting and the roll call of "Something I learned the hard way" gave many good examples. Mrs. Dave Triebner gave her report of the district annual as well as current events and the courtesy remarks. Mrs. Grant MacLean gave a poem. Mrs. Vern Alderdice gave the treasurer's report. Lunch was served by Mrs. McDowell, her co -hostess Mrs. Charles Eyre and the committee in charge. Personals Mr. and Mrs. Doug McGregor are holidaying in the U.S.A. Mrs. Grace Drummond, Mrs. Campbell Eyre, Mrs. Ross Broadfoot . and ' Mrs. Harry Caldwell attended the picnic in Grand Bend as guests of the Grand Bend Women's Institute.' Mr. and Mrs. Grant Love, Caro, Michigan visited in the village last week. Gun Club The Kippen Gun Club met June 16 with 21 shooters. Bayfield Cubs and Scouts hold year end barbecue On Saturday evening, the Bayfield Cubs and Scouts wound up their year with a family barbecue. Ian Siert- sema was first, and Jon Lep- pington and Darryn McAsh (first-year Cub) came se- cond and third in ac- cumulating the most perfor- mance points over the past year. The boys had fun put- ting on a .skit where they, managed to get some of their fathers pretty wet. Bobbi -Jo Leppington tied with Sheila Lindsay for most performance points fn the Brownie Pack. Their final meeting was a Mother and Daughter Banquet at Bayfield United Church on Thursday evening. Well done, kids! The Cubs, Scouts and Brownies will be meeting the laker "The Bayfield" when it comes to Bayfield in July. Comings and g By Mary Chessell Ruth and Murdock Mor- rison have had some very in- teresting bus trips recently. They spent a weekend at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio where they attended the 23rd an- niversary of the Cathedral of Tomorrow. Rex Humbard and his family were present for this special occasion. A most enjoyable holiday was spent at the Scott Farm Resort at Oquaga Lake in New York State, where there was recreation and enter- tainment to suit everybody. On the way down they visited the famous Corning Glass Works. They also went on an after- noon bus trip to the Big Creek Boat Farm at Caledonia on the Grand River, and enjoyed a cruise• and dinner on the Grand River Belle. This was follow- ed by films of many places on the Grand River as it flows through to Lake Erie. There is a bake shop, craft shop and dining room where entertainment and meals are provided. Another highlight of their travels was a trip to Hamilton to see the Geritol Follies at Hamilton Place. They had time to shop at Jackson Mall and had din- ner at the Y.W.C.A. In the Slo-pitch tourna- ment at Kirkton on the weekend, the Stanley Steamers won 10-8 in their game gainst Stratford, and 15-5 over New Hamburg on Saturday. They were. defeated 15-3 by Hamilton. on Sunday in the semi-finals. Recreation committee members are reminded of their meeting on Tuesday, June 30 at 8:30 pm. • There was chore than fishing to cause a little ex- citement for . Bill Chessell and . brother-in-law Don Riehl on our first night in camp at Powassan a week ago. A man was heard call- ing from across the river at 10:30 at night that he was lost. They went over and picked ,him up, then got the camp owner out . of bed to return him to his car, which had a dead battery. Instead of following the road to a far- mhouse, he had attempted to go across heavily . wooded ravines and become hopelessly lost until he came out in a meadow from where he could see the camp lights. The man was a new employee of the township, and not familiar with the area: • We caught some real 1lice Linda Elizabeth Bakelaar was united in marriage with Stephen Paul Broadbent on May 30, at the Unitarian Fellowship Chapel of N.W. Toronto, Weston. The newlyweds are residing in Willowdale, Ont. Varna Sunday School will have their promotion ceremony next Sunday at a special children's church service. The following Sun- day the service will be in Goshen at 11:00 o'clock. Grant and Elva Webster and Tom and Barb Consitt attended the MO wedding anniversary celebration for Marg and Ray Consitt at Kippen on Sunday. Grant and Elva were guests at the DeKens - Danisma wedding in the Christian Reformed Church at Clinton on June 12. Many people from Varna and area attended the Sproule -Webster wedding reception at the Pineridge Chalet on Saturday evening. Cheryl certainly had perfect weather for her wedding. Gordon Hill, Anna Keys and Joyce Dowson, members of the Varna - Goshen Refugee Committee took part in a special church service on June 14. Rev. Nor- man Pick was the guest preacher, and special music was "Amazing Grace" sung by Hiep Nguyen and "Ex- odus" by Pete Postill. A barbecue and party was held in the church sheds honoring the Nguyen family who are moving to Huron Park the beginning of July. Gordon expressed his ap- preciation to all who had helped, especially those who had driven them to work in the early morning.. Each committee member spoke, expressing their delight at working with the family. Ivan McClymont, Geraldine Eckel, Rev. Wilena Brown • and Anson McKinley were the other committee members. Gifts of books on Canada and photo albums containing pictures. of the party were presented to Hai and to Thai and Hiep and their family. Rev. Wilena Brown presented Gordon with . a Certificate of Recognition for his leader- ship and efforts .on behalf of the family. Carol Simons expressed her joy in working with Hiep for the Board of Education. Thai and Hiep both have their d'river's license and have bought a car, and Hai. has purchased a motorcycle. The men are working at Huron Park and the boys have done well at school. A chocolate cake represen- ting the dark and dangerous conditions the Nguyens fled from was served, and a light cake represented brightness and hope for the future. Joyce Dowson presented the Nguyens with a sum- mary of the committee's ex- perience written in free verse, telling of only a week to prepare for their arrival, the way men and women came and helped polish, paint and paper, the quick arrival of dishes, furniture and appliances, and the ex- citement at meeting and welcoming them. They were amused with "Wilena" our minister insisting on taking her Dodge Omni to meet them so they wouldn't think everyone in Canada drove a Lincoln Continental.
