Round and about the village
Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Windebank of London have
been spending a few days at
their Bayfield cottage during
the past week.
Bernard and Elaine
Sturgeon and sons Jeff and
Roland, all of Orangeville,
spent the weekend at their
Louisa Street cottage in
Bayfield. Mom and the boys
will be staying for two weeks
and Bence will join them
later in their holiday.
Mr. Fred Arkell has mov-
ed from his house in
Goderich into the Senior
Citizens Home there. He is of
course a former Bayfieldite.
Mr. Bob Turner has
returned home after a stay
in hospital. -
Mr. and Mrs. Bud
Sturgeon and Mr. Tim West
attended the summer
Nostalgia -Rama - in
Woodstock last Sunday.
Mr. Jack Sturgeon is cur-
rently a patient in Alexandra
General and Marine
Hospital in Goderich.
Matt and Barb Smith and
family of London, spent a
few days at their Bayfield
cottage this past week.
From the Vernon Daily
News we read the following
story -"In Women's High
Jump" - "Arkell Captures
Medal". The story went onto
read, "Vernon's Karyn
Arkell won a bronze medal in
women's high jump at the
British Columbia High
School Track and Field
Championships, Saturday
(June 6), at Burnaby's
Swangard Stadium. Arkell
jumped 1.67 metres, just .06
metres less than gold medal
winner Jani Lutz of- Centen-
nial (Coquitlam). Second
place Jeanne Cockroft of
South Delta, also jumped 1.73
metres. Vernon Senior

Lampoonery
I had dearly intended to present Act II of the play this
week but the kettle's on the boil and I'm so easily
drawn away. Time is flying by much too quickly and
I'm pressed to present my yearly rhyme on the opening
of bass season for this coming weekend. The weather
has been very unsettled of late so, for your future
knowledge, I have also the need to discuss rain.
+++
So okay, let's talk about rain. Who discovered it?
Noah. How does a loon tell if it's raining? Sticks his
hand out the window and sees if it gets wet. Now for the
serious business of scientifically forecasting rain to
avert wet picnics and backyard barbecues during the
summer holiday season, I have compiled the following
list of foolproof signs which have been passed down
through generations of hill folk.
It will rain if:
1. A weather beetle, stored in a match box, flips over
on its back when the box is open and scratches its
stomach. Rain on that day; 2. If a dog eats grass in the
morning it will rain by nightfall.
3. A verse on cats -
df a cat licks
Against the grain
By the end of day
Will be sure to rain.
4. A verse on foul (fowl) weather -
If a rooster crows
Before he's in bed
He'll wake up
With a soggy head.
5. If you can find a ladybug, or a ladybug finds you,
the weather will be clear for at least 12 hours; 6. If the
leaves on a tree `turn up' during the day you can expect
rainlate in the afternoon or early evening.
7. If ants are observed building up the edges of the
entrance to their hill, it will rain within 24, hours; 8. If
goats are observed walking downhill it will rain that
day. If they walk uphill the weather will be clear; 9.
Bullfrogs turn dark the day before a rain; 10. If a cat is
seen sneezing, it will rain within 48 hours:
That is how a sensible person would predict rain. But
be sure to check more than one sign. Three signs in
agreement are right on. Amateurs should check to see
if the sky is dark and listen for thunder. Poltroons
observe the TV report.
Ode to Bass Fishing (part two)
The waders leaked
Like a son -of -a -gun
But the wet arse was
Only half the fun.
We hit the river
At six o'clock
And stood in the rain
At the sailboat dock.
Standing in the water
Fishin' with leeches
Shivering and shakin'
In our soggy breeches.
Greg and Emily
Standing by Nora
With tangled lines
I watched in horror.
With a kirby hook
And a sinker of lead
The beggars landed
A big old sheephead.
The boysfrom Detroit
Were at it again
Singing the helgramite
Fishers refrain.
With six bass each
And headin uptown
To scale 'em and clean 'em
And gobble them down.
What ever became
Of the Herford and Jim
Bob and Gil
And Rob and Tim?
I expect they're still
At the old bass hole
l.earnin' to cast
Their new fishin' poles.
Good luck to all those fishermen who try their luck at
Bayfield this opening day and let's hope we find lots of
ladybugs on Saturday morning.
ings of his athletes. Our kids
did well, he said, and we'll be
better next year."
Karyn is the daughter of
Judge and Mrs. Ken Arkell
Vernon, B.C., and Ken is the
youngest son of Fred Arkell
of Goderich (formerly of
Bayfield) and the brother of
Mrs. Vera Turner of
Bayfield. Ken was an athlete
in his own right as he com-
peted to all sports at Clinton
Collegiate during the 1950's
and later played football at
Western University in Lon-
don and professional football
with the B.C. Lions. - Con-
gratulations to Karyn in her
future sporting endeavours.
Saturday guests of Greg
and Emily Nielsen at their
cottage were Matt Linden
and his girlfriend Domini-
que, of London, and Rob
Dowler and Lisanne Hill of
Toronto. As usual the group
had trouble trying to figure
out what to do on a Saturday
night so they held a vote. It
was either Grand Bend and
the buffalo burgers, Hensall
and the fiddlers, watching
TV, Goderich and Burt
Reynolds at the drive-in or a
beach party in Bayfield, but
even the best laid plans can
go asunder as everyone
pooped out early in the even-
ing and went home to bed.
And this week we have the
opportunity of welcoming a
new resident to Bayfield in
the person of a baby
daughter for Gil and Helen,
alias Moleman, Latimer of
Howard Street. It has been
rumoured that the little eight
pounder will be named Wen-
dy.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Yates
of Newcastle are spending a
few days with Gil Latimer,
while their daughter Helen
and grandchild recuperate
in hospital.
A reminder for those who
are taking the swimming
lessons at the Vanastra Pool
starting June 30 to July 10.
The bus will be leaving the
Municipal Building in
Bayfield at 12:45 from Mon-
day to Friday with the ex-
ception of Tuesdays when it
will leave at 12:30. For fur-
ther information call. 565-

Sheri Ward of Seaforth
was an overnight guest of
Lydia Erickson on Friday
and Saturday. Saturday, Mr.
and Mrs. Ward, Trevor and
Murray, visited with the
Erickson family at which
time Sheri returned home
with them.
Saturday guests of the
Walter Erickson family also
included Mr. and Mrs. Rob
Irwin and Robbie of London.
On Sunday the Ericksons
motored to Michigan to visit
with friends there.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
Cavers and Mrs. `° Ruth
Sayers from Pilot Mound,
Manitoba, visited recently
with Mrs. Jay Ball at Clan
Gregor Apartments.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cooke,
Downsview, spent the
weekend with sister, Jay
Ball.
Recent visitors for Mrs.
Bertha Turner of Clan
Gregor Apartments were
her son and his wife, Mr. and
Mrs. Wilfred Turner of New
Sarum, and grand -daughter
and husband, Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Wilkinson from Lon-
don.
Canon Paull was admitted
to Clinton Hospital on Tues-
day of last week. Hie is now
making good progress and
all his many friends wish
him a speedy recovery from
his indisposition.
Harry Baker proudly
celebrates his 78th birthday
this coming weekend. Full of
vim and vigour he is
thoroughly enjoying a series
of family parties to mark the
event. Happy birthday and
many more to come. •

Helpful hint
Always use cold water in the
disposal. It solidifies the
grease which is ground up and
flushed away. Hot water is
costly and unnecessary.
