Housewives win tourney The Clinton Housewives fastball , team contIni a to show their skills at winning baseball games, when they swept to a championship trophy and $420 at the first annual Goderich Ladies Fastball Tournament last by / steve cooke So you think you need 201b. test line on your fishing reel do you? Well, it's just not so. This past weekend I enjoyed the opportunity of attending a convention of Outdoor Writers in Thompson, Manitoba and had the chance to talk to and watch some real experts in ac- tion. One of the things which quickly became apparent was that the majority of these people preferred to use ultra light tackle, and even those who had regular gear seldom had any more than six lb. test on their reels. Burt Myers, the editor of Ontario Out Of Doors, is known to be an excellent and avid muskie fisherman. The Fist day I fished With him, Burt caught and releas- ed a 12 and 15 lb northern pike along with half a dozen dyes. The next:day Burt was in a. different boat and landed another or eight walleyes. He also picked up another :12 lb northern and an 18 pounder. He caught ' several smaller, ones: before losing one after a 15 minute fight. Needless to say, the fishing was excellent (even:I caught my share, but no Monsters like the pike Burt had ori). The amazing part, however, is that he was using an ultralight" Ryobi reel, a light Eagle Claw pack and'rod and SIX pound test line with No leader. Now Burt Meyer is an expert fisherman and knows how to adjust his drag properly and how to play a fish correctly, but he was catching fish that weighed three timenivhat the breaking strength of his line was. When wastlie`last time: you caught a 201b. fish on your 20 Ib. bco representativeI talked to does a good deal for their new equipment and he talks of cat- chingarpon in. Florida on 201b. test line. He claimed that if youhad enough line o,,n the, reel, you'd eventually b`olal.n you played the z rrpWVAthebait fid and had your drag adjusted properly. (Tar- pon bythe way run between 100 and l5olbs. ). •T a man from Trilene hadsli hilar tales to tell and also pointed out that the zlower the pound test, the umallerthe thie line i 1ti ng in longer, more accurate casts add h tterlure action. Everyone seem- edtoagree that the heavier theline, the more likely the clhanceaof the fish spotting it andseveralpeople pointed out that nit's been proven that, Under the same condi- tions,: the man using the lighter line will catch more 'fish. If you've ever seen someone out during the rain- bow run with a noodle rod and 2 or 4 lb. test, you'll be quick to agree. If you don't believe me, just start ask- ing sking the people who are catching fish around you what weightof.line they're using, and you'll see for yourself. 'i1 hat u • you think of fishing tournaments? I don't oderhiesfor kids the extended Contests for. birgfishlat are Onion more of a casual basis, but the hard co. big money (or "prizes), catch as many pounds oish.asyou can in a day type of tournament. 'these are the tournaments that started in the U.S. and are really starting to bloom in Canada. Apparently there are over 30 such tournaments scheduled to take piacejii Ontario this summer. Their adult equipment is excellent as well and they produce some of the finest rods and reels in the world,, but they are the only company that I know of that tries to produce scaled down easy to use fishing gear for kids as well. They are also the official suppliers for the Boy Scouts of America. Along with supplying equipment for youngsters, they are also trying to instill a sense of sportsmanship and fair play in them which hopefully they will retain as they get older. In order to promote this, they are in the process of a "Fish Canada" program which they hope they will have out to the public in the near future. What it actually involves is the releasing of fish which are not destined to be eaten. If a youngster catches a fish that is too small to eat, or of a species for which they were not fishing, Zebco will send him (or her) a cer- tificate declaring the applicant a participant in this program along with an attractive decal which can be affixed to their tackle box or dad's boat. I don't know all the details yet, but keep an eye out for the applica- tion forms on the counters of sporting goods stores, etc. As soon as I get all the info, I'll do a column on it so you'll know how to make your son or daughter a proud fisherman with their very own certificate. weekend. ; , The event featured 32 teams, including ones from Kitchener, Stratford, Waterloo, as well as ones from Listowel; Palmerston, Exeter and Goderich The Housewives easily won their first game, beating Palmerston 16-0 and then rolled over Listowel 5-0 in the second game. In the semi-finals, it looked like the roof had caved in on the Clinton women, when they were behind 8-1 to Exeter in the top of the fifth, and the game was nearly cancelled by the eight -run mercy ruling. But the Housewives stormed back, keeping the Exeter runners from reaching home plate, while they banged off nine more runs to win the game 10-8. The Exeter team was un- derstandably upset. In the final, Clinton battled the Goderich team, but came out on top 18-11 to win the championship. Homers in the tournament were hit by Pat Norman, Jan Rutledge and Louise Brown, while Clinton's Sandy Burns and Gail Daer shared the pitching duties. The Housewives play . in another tournament this coming weekend in Kin- cardine, and in regular league play, they have a record of three wins, no losses and one tie. Here are the winners at the track meet at St. Joseph's Separate School. Left to right are Terry Davies top, and Debbie Lee, bottom, senior winners. Centre are Kerry Schmidt, top, and Disoumang Phonphiboun, intermediate winners, and right are junior winners Jeromy Ten Hag, top, and Teresa Vandenelzen.
