Celebrate 75th The Ontario Horticultural Association turns 75 this year and 800 members will be celebrating the special anniversary June 17, 18 and 19 in Niagara Falls, Ontario at the association's annual convention. The theme this year is, "Celebrate the past. Plan for the future". The agenda reflects the theme by in, eluding awards, ribbons and caps given over the years. A highlight will be a seminar on plant cultivars for the future. "An anniversary isn't just a time to sit back and say, "look what we've done in the past," says Russ Gomme,, secretary of the association, "It's also time to look to the future, to see the potential and discuss future plans. "I think this 75th anniver- sary convention is a milestone and 'offers a chance to get together to hear speakers and panelists who can give us information, to enhance our efforts across the province in our own com- munities." • The highlight of the con- vention will be Thursday night when the Hon. Robert Welch, Minister of Energy, addresses the banquet. Also at this banquet, Land- scape Ontario will present a special shovel to the associa- tion which delegates will use on Friday when they plant a tree in Queen Victoria Park to commemorate the an- niversary. "Landscape Ontario wanted to give us something useful for this anniversary and a shovel is something that will really come in han- dy", says Mr. Gonane. Other events at the con- vention include seminars on horticulture at local fairs, educational opportunities in horticulture, communica- tions, youth programs and on the future planning of the association. On Thursday morning, past president Phil Dodds will speak about the history of the association. Hunger strike ends LISTOWEL - Perth County archivist Jim Anderson has ended his hunger strike. Mr. Anderson who has been subsisting on fruit juices for almost 40 days to protest a decision by Stratford and Perth County councils to disband the county Historical Board, ate his first solid food - a small quantity of granola - on May 27. Mr. Anderson said he decided to end his hunger strike because of the positive results. of a meeting to rally support for the historical board. More than 80 people attended and at the end of the meeting James Reaney, a well-known poet and playwright, gained the backing of the audience for a written statement urging Perth municipalities to reinstate the Perth County Historical Board. Mr. Anderson reported that he still felt "weak and tired" and that his weight dropped from 155 to 140 pounds. Some people, he indicated, have construed his protest method as "a kind of black- mail, but this wasn't my intention,." he stated. The hunger strike Mr. Anderson said, was "in- tended as a catalyst. It was meant to be a thorn in the conscience of the com- munity." He also noted that politicians In the county, "don't seem to realize that because of Stratford's cultural captive audience, history could be turned into an industry with countywide benefits. History is everybody's thing, it should be supported municipally." Inst Nescafe nt Coffee 10 oz. Chase and Sanborn Regular CIJNTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY.
