Picnic tables in the Library Park offered
a shady, relaxing spot to take in the af-
Gawd how I love mice, Peeping
Toms, cockroaches, burglars, June
bugs, thunder storms, those giant
centipedes, drunken midnight bashes
and spiders. Give me any of these late
night weird, creepy, crawly things - but
save me from The Bats!
The Rattenbury Street Zoo is
featuring new nightly entertainment -
ugly, vicious little black flying
creatures andattack people's heads.
Okay, okay, so bats don't get in your
hair, but they are definitely ugly, they
do fly around in the dark, and they do
conjure up all sorts of horrible and
spooky thoughts.
The days of the mouse scampering
around my feet, the giant black beetle
making his home in my housecoat, and
the gargantuan wood ants trooping
around the place, all seem to bring back
fond memories now when compared to
The Bat.
But this week, the black flying
creatures are in the limelight at The
Zoo and they are without a doubt
driving this resident, (excuse the pun),
absolutely batty.
• After only one sleepless night, and 10 -
fingernails later, the bats, (I assume
there are more than one) are getting
the best of me. They would do the same
to you, if you had to contend with their
nocturnal activities.
It began on Monday night, at 12:59
am to be exact when I‘was awoken by a
strange noise. It was a constant
scratching, sound coining from the
vicinity of my bedroonlwindows.
"A branch brushing up to the
screen," I tried to reason, but I knew in
my heart that The Zoo would never let
me off that easy.
It vaguely sounded like mice again,
and the squealing noises coming frdm
;the upperAvindows-seernedlo support
'gettheory, but how the heck could they'
get up so high, and how many were
there, it sounded like a herd of them.
1 Klompen Feest attracts 15,000
ternoon festivities and Mrs. O. Van
Dian= offered a special Dutch Tea at her
Ontario Street Holiday Home. The tables
were continually full at Mrs. Van Dam-
rne 's and her lunch included a variety of
spicy Dutch cookies and cakes, sand-
wichesand rich chocolates.
Saturday afternoon's stage show
provided continual entertainment with
colorful Dutch dancers and musicians,
highlighted by the late afternoon ex-
travaganza put on by The Dykehoppers
from London. The dancers and band easily
brought the people to their feet for the Bird
Dance, and wound the unsuspecting crowd
round and round in circles in the hysterical
Dutch Promenade.
The evening finished off with a monster
chicken barbecue that filled the grand-
shelley
y mcphee
I suddenly felt very weak when I
remembered how one friend trapped 15
mice in one month in his house, and by
the sounds of things there had to be at
least 50 of the creatures trying to get at
me.
"I'll drive to Goderich and stay
overnight with friends," I brainwaved,
only to be brought back to the depths of
despair when I remembered that, my
gas tank was empty. I was going to fill
it in the morning.
Late at night, when I'm half asleep,
my brain can do strange things and my
imagination is at it's most vivid, weird
and wild stage. Drifting off to sleep to
the constant scratching sound, I started
dreaming about Salem's Lot. That's a
novel and movie about vampires, and
the reanimated corpses scratched their
long nails against the window panes,
waiting for their poor unsuspecting
victims to be taken into their ghoulish
spell
"Whoa, let's wake up and get
realistic here," I shuttered, as I caught
hold of my sanity.
I logically reasoned that bats are
completely harmless and I am simply a
dupe for any monstrous tales of horror.
Everyone contends with bats, heck
even my grandmother can handle those
little guys with one swift smack of her
corn broom.
So I'm a little neurotic when it comes
to uninvited creatures in my house, but
I• can live with that, and as I become
more experienced and practiced with
things that go bump in the night, I'll be
able to wield the old broom as well as
grandma does.
There is hope, and soon I'll haye a
hubby to look after all those yucky little
household duties, and someday my kids
will be able to &ex mother down from
atop:Alter chair or -from- under her
protective blanket when the mice,
crawly critters and bats send me into
complete hysteria! •

stand, arena and community park with
thousands of hungry diners.
Despite overstuffed stomachs, blistered
feet, and sunburned bodies, general public
consensus has deemed Klompen Feest an
overwhelming success and it is estimated
that thousands of dollars have been raised,
to go towards the Clinton Hospital building
fund.
With the 1 I Feest completed, a
decision now must be made by the Feest
committee and Clinton area residents,
whether to continue to the celebration next
year. The Klompen Feest committee will
be holding a public meeting on June 2,
starting at 8 pm in the town hall to discuss
the celebration. They are looking for your
public support and in -put.

Dutch, not only in Canada but also
elsewhere in the world are recognizable
not because they wear wooden shoes, but
because they display a thrifty and hi-
dustrious lifestyle and are dedicated to
their 'families and their, work. They, I
believe, form a driving force that helps in
keeping this young country of ours going.
"The Dutch are often typified as people
that wear wooden shoes or skates and
traditional costumes while they are
carrying a bouquet of tulips in their hands.
Nothing of course is further from the truth
After all, not all Canadians are dressed up
as Mounites. In Holland these days, people
dressed in local costumes, wearing
"klompen" are hard to come by, which in
fact is quite different from the situation as
it was 20 years or longer ago.
"I myself am not much for wooden
shoes. Has anyone of von ever worn them
for an extended period of time? They are
hard on your feet and it takes time for
calluses to form to make the wearing of
this kind of footwear comfortable to any
degree.
that you, fun -loving Huronians wanted to
have a festivity of this kind anyway and by
giving it a folkloric theme, you have added
a little touch of class to an already great
undertaking. Looking over the program
that is being offered to all of you during
these two days, one has to assume that a
tremendous amount of time and work has
gone into its organization. Therefore, I
cannot let this occasion go by without
commending the organizing -committee
and all the participants in the program for
a job well done.
"Please enjoy yourselves on this
beautiful day, have a great time, you all
deserve it.
"Your Worship, Mr. Bob Campbell,
ladies and gentlemen, it is a great pleasure
to me to officially declare this First
Clinton Klompenfeest 1981 opened. Thank
you."
Down with chicken!
Once some initial problems were overcome, the lines moved swiftly at the Klompen
Feest chicken barbecue last Saturday, as six tables of volunteers dispensed food to 3,000
hungry people in three hours. Here Hen Daer and Donna Wood dole out the food. (James
