Vanastra Pu lie School
Will not close yet
Vanastra Public School
has been granted a stay of
eneczation for....lt._:.leaet_
another year by the regional
office of the Mf dstry of
Education.
The regional office had
• informed the board of
education that, beginning in
September, students of
Vanastra Public School
would be accomodated in
Clinton and Brucefield
Schools. The Vanastra
School was started in 1077
beeausie schools in Clinton
and Brucefield could not
handle the excess students.
In 1077 the regional office
agreed to rent a building .in
Vanastra from Conestoga
College for a three-year
period. D,A..Kinchlea of the
ministry regional office in
London, informed the board
that the Ministry would not
renew the lease en the
building 'after June of this
Students
Last week was Education
Week across Ontario. This
year's theme was
"Celebrate Learning".
On Monday, we celebrated
by having hat and T-shirt
day when everyone wore
their favourite to school,
while on Tuesday, Odd Day,
split personalities were the
rage. On Tuesday evening,
we had a talent show and our
choir put on a superb perfor-
mance. Jennifer Burt
delighted the crowd with a
step dance, accompanied by
her teacher, Mrs. Flynn. A
year and the students were
to be accomodated in neigh-
bouring schools,
That declisian ivas • later
reversed and Vanastra
Public School Will be open at
least until June 1982,
In a letter to Kinchlea,
director or education John
Cochrane pointed out that
transportation costs for the
101 students would amount to
$26,045while rental fees are
$27,000 annually. He
suggested the $995 saving
was not worth the problems
the board' and ministry
would inherit as a result of
the closure.
In his letter to the regional
office, Cochrane said closure
of the school would result in
an ugly situation adding that
it would contribute to the
gangrenous demise of a
Huron County community.

Couple celebrate
40th anniversary
Edgar and Helen Rathwell
celebrated their 40th wed-
ding anniversary on Satur-
day, May 9 with a dinner
party given by their family
at the Bayfield Restaurant,
The couple were married
on May 10, 1941 at the home
of her parents, Mr, and Mrs.
Edward Welsh, north of Clin-
ton. Edgar and Helen lived
or' the farm (Lot V) on the
Bayfield Line for 30 years,
where they raised their
family. After selling the
farm in the early 1970s the
couple moved to Goderich
where they took up residence
on Picton Street and then on
Mill Road. After several
years in the County Seat they
moved to their present ad-
dress at 4 Regina, Vanastra.
Special guests at the din-
ner were Mrs. Gordon
Rathwell and Harold and
Donna Tyndall. The family
presented their parents with
the gift of a cranberry glass
basket.
Following the dinner a
reception and dance was
held in their honor at the
Recreation Centre in
6anastra. About 300 guests
d aced to the music of the
Ian Wilbee Orchestra. An
open house was held on Sun-
day, May 10 at the
Rathwell's home in
Vanastra.
Children and grand-
children attending the
weekend celebrations were
Fred and Marilyn Bruinsma,
Tina and Tara of Goderich;
Bernard and Elaine
Sturgeon, Jeffrey and
Roland of Orangeville;
Richard and Lynda Talbot,
Lori and Cindy of Bayfield;
Steven and Sally Rathwell
and Adam of Vanastra and
Mark and Crystal Rathwell
of Leamington.
crowd with three recorder
tunes. Although this group is
not yet ready for the O'Keefe
Centre, they definitely have
learned a great deal using
these instruments this year.
The final act Tuesday
evening was the Paul
Brothers and Shirley. These
professional entertainers
really set the tone to
celebrate learning. They
were the tank of Vanastra for
days.
Wednesday was dress up
day at the school when
everyone wore their Sunday
best. On Thursday, we had
50's day and The Happy
Days theme proved to be one
of the most popular of the
week.
On Friday we had an Open
House and at lunchtime and
after school, we launched 200
balloons to signal the end of
Education Week and to
herald the beginning of Na-
tional Book Festival. We tru-
ly celebrate Education Week
at the Vanastra Public
School. 'f
