Nursing Association gets a loud cheer from the class for
*Nurses' Week
Remember workers in white
The week of May 4 to 9 has
been designated as Nurses'
Week.
In Ontario there are 29,000
women and men who are
registered with the Ontario
Nurses' Association (ONA)
as Registered Nurses. These
nursesare employed in
hospitals, health units, VON,
clinics, nursing homes,
homes for the aged and in-
dustry.
Nurses, like many other
professionals, .have a union
that works for them. The On-
tario Nursing Association is
their union and its objectives
includeadvancement of
social; economic andgeneral
welfare of .nurses; pro-
moting better working condi-
tions through the negotia-
tions of written contracts;
better communication.
between employees and
employers; promotion of the
highest standards of health
care; unity within the .nurs-
ing profession and other
-allied fields through co-
operation with and support
of other organizations shar-
ing the same objectives as
nursing.
The ONA has not been in
existence very long. In 1943
the, Canadian Nurses'
Association (CNA) set 1 up a
Labor Relations Committee
and in 1944 the CNA decided
that each province should
have collective bargaining
units through their own Pro-
vincial Professional Associa-
tion. That . same year the
Registered Nurses' Associa-
tion of Otltario (RNAO) •set
up its first labor relations
committee. It was a small,
.weak committee consisting
of three people. For the. next
20 years the RNAO fought to
join their own collective
bargaining unit.
Finally the hospital groups
began to be certified in-
dividually. In 1973 there
were 104 nurses' associa-
tions bargaining as in-
dividual units. There were
13,000 members. In 1973 the
groups were reorganized
and called the Ontario
Nurses' Association and the
104 individual groups joined
together.
Since then the number has
grown from 104 to 209 local
groups and more than 29,000
nurses are _members. Head
offices are in Toronto, with
local offices located in major
centres throughout Ontario.
The ONA representative pro-
vides various services to
locals and members
throughout Ontario.
ONA is funded by dues
paid by its members.. Being
a member of, ONA gives the
RN the right to attend
meetings and to have a say
in salary, working and condi-
tions. ONA will assist with
any grievances that might
come up at the job. A
newsletter is circulated once
a month. ONA sponsors sum-
mer schools, workshops and
seminars.

Whisky gets feathered.
MITCHELL - Despite the
clawmarks on his back and a
three-inch gash along his
belly, Whisky is recovering.
The fuzzy little dog was
attacked, not by a bigger dog
or even a cat, but his
unexpected enemy was a
great -horned owl.
Whisky, a five year-old
poodle owned by Dave and
Joan Steinbach of Mitchell
was behind their home,
scurrying through an early
morning fog, when he was
tacked by the large bird.
Ace oruing to Mrs.
Steinbach, Whisky "looks a
lot like a rabbit," and she
reasons that the owl had the
same idea.
After the attack, Whisky
didn't move for five days,
but by the next weekend had
recovered to his former
energetic self, although
Mindful of his stitches.
There are tyvo owls in the
bush behind the Steinbach's
property, but their second
dog George, a German
Shepherd hasn't had any
problems with the big birds.

representative on the Health
and Safety Committee of the
Hospital, Sharon Mc-
Clenaghan. Barb Hodgins is
the nurse representative
that deals with any staff pro-
blems.
The theme for Nurses'
Week this year is Discover
Nursing and local 182 of Clin-
ton has several activities
planned to mark Nurses',
Week. Several Grade 4
classes in area schools have
been asked to tell through
pictures and drawings how
they see hospitals and nurs-
ing. The classes willeach get
a special prize for their ef-
forts. The resulting pictures
`hopefully will be posted in
the windows of local
businesses throughout
Nurses' Week.
There will be displays in
various business windows
depicting various aspects of
nursing including a display
on Cardio Pulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR). The
CPR dolls Resusi Annie and
baby Resusi will be the main
attractions in these displays.
They are the mannequins
that are used in CPR classes

technique of CPR, .Key tags,
balloons and bumper
stickers will also be given

Men arrested
CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, MAY 7 , 1981—PAGE 7
ominica invasion halted
LISTOWEL - A planned
invasion of the Caribbean
island of Dominica, thwarted
by U.S.A. federal agents, has
resulted in the arrests of
eight Americans and two
Canadians, including a
Listowel area native.
The 10 men, arrested` near
New Orleans with a quantity
of weapons, were remanded
in custody with bail set up to
$500,000 each. They are
scheduled for a preliminary
hearing. -
The two Canadians
arrested were Wolfgang
Walter Droege, 31, until
recently the West Coast
director of theKlu Klux Klan
(KKK), and Larry Lloyd
Jacklin, 22, of RR 1,
Listowel.
Mr. Jack lin is not a KKK
member and is not known to
police in this area.
Contacted by The Listowel
Banner, Mr. Jacklin's
mother said the family was
astonished when they were
first contacted by news
reporters regarding the
story.
Mrs. Jacklin said her son
had left home over two.
weeks ago, saying he was
going to spend a couple of
weeks out west. She noted
that her son had never been
in any kind of trouble before
and added, "The only thing I
can say is that if he was
mixed up in anything of this
sort, thank God they were
stopped before anyone was
hart - you've got to think of
that side of it too."
