.Extermination
By Barry Turner
Even through the confines
of its miniscule intelligence,
the fly on the white house
wall had a certain level of
understanding. He and other
flies possessed a crude form
of communication, a com-
bination of telepathic
vibrations along with in-
termittent buzzing.
This insect buzzed
cautiously es he flew over
to join some friends on the
window sill. He touched
down - and worriedly
inquired, "Have the giants
arrived with the fly swatters
today?"
The reply of "Negative"
came from one of his many
brothers.
As he warmed himself in
the sunshine, the newly
arrived fly commented,

She replied curtly, "Thank
you". It was then that he saw
the grim attitude of his
counterparts.
Just then the fly squadron
leader buzzed in declaring,
"Flies, a grave ex-
termination is occurring.
Reports are correct."
He had scarcely spoken
when a great shadow
overtook them. As a rush of
choking gas engulfed them,
every fly sensed the human
thoughts of, "Kill, kill,.
For two flies, escape was
possible. The squadron
leader and the newly arrived
fly moved their freshly used
wings and zoomed out of the
cloud. Behind them they
could feel the death screams
of their friends. The two
escapees, feeling their
energy draining away,
landed on the white
am so weak tired ...",
mumbled the fly leader.
With that, he went limp and
fell to the floor below.
The final fly was also
feeling faint. Then he
caught: again the strong
thoughts of, "Kill, kill,
kill..." His mind shouted,
"No! No! I want to live!",
but it was too late. A cloud of
fly spray enveloped his body.
He . felt his legs -go lltnp.
Then, as he fell to the floor,
his faint consciousness
slipped into oblivion.
