H. Alex Clark, Director of Music at Metropolitan, conducted the choir and orchestra and'thp organist was John McIntosh. "Israel in Egypt" wds written in 1739, three years before the well-known "Messiah". It depicts the Israelites' escape from Egypt under Moses' leadership. Many of the choruses were written for a double choir, one choir echoing the other, which the large Metropolitan 70 voice choir -performed well, 'doing justice to Handel's writing. Some of the music was very descriptive, such as the chorus describing the plague of swarms of flies when the accompaniment played by • the orchestra sounded very realistic. There were no actual flies, but the powerful sounds of the choir, organ and orchestra did rouse the church bat which flew around and added its voice to the music for a few bars. The solos and duets were beautifully sung by the six soloists. Constance Newland, soprano, Devine Bailey, mezzo-soprano, Carl Duggan, tenor and Mel Braun, baritone are regular soloists at Metropolitan. Margaret Adams, also from Metropolitan had to be, replaced at the last moment due to illness, by Frances Brown, contralto, whose husband Alvin Reimer, baritone, was also a soloist. Mel Braun may be familiar to some as he is a former member of the 'Hymn Sing' chorus which sings on T.V. Alex Clark, the conductor, is well-known in this area as a former music director in Goderich. More recently he was gaest conductor at the Festivals of Sacred Music in 1979 at Wesley Willis United Church, Clinton and at North Street Church in Goderich in 1950 in• which many .area choirs participated. The Metropolitan United Choir has performed many of the larger works by the old masters, such as `Elijah' by Mendelssohn and "The Creation" by Hayden and `Judas Maccabaeus" by Handel. They provide a service to the whole London area by giving everyone an opportunity, which one doesn't often have, of hearing this beautiful religious music. Tuckersmith UCW enjoy dinner By Mrs. Doris Sillery Tuckersmith Unit 1 held their Easter meeting, and the 1980 Penny losers catered supper to the win- ners at 6 pm when 23 sat down to well filled plates. A hymn was sung with Mrs. Ann Broadfoot at the piano. Mrs. Paterson read the scripture, and Mrs. Broad - foot gave her "topic" written by Rev. Stan MacDonald on the "Art of Living where you are". Mrs. Hazel McCartney, the president, welcomed everyone, especially the visitors and members who have returned after spen- ding the winter in Florida. She thanked the devotion leaders and expressed her appreciation to the ladies who were penny losers for serving such a lovely meal. Mrs. Beatrice Stoll read the minutes and 18 members answered the roll call with an Easter verse or scripture. Mrs. Vino Berry reported on the treasury.
