And I firmly believe that in order to en= sure a good future for this province, we as adults must take a very real interest, now, in the contributions olir present day youthful population is making to society." These were the words of David Wenger, President of the Ontario Weekly Newspapers Association (OWNA), following his announcement of a program instituted to honour Ontario's junior citizens. Officially called, "Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards", the program is a joint undertaking of -OWN ,. and CP Air. "The program is designed to make everyone more aware of our young citizens by recognizing outstanding achievements or acts of courage and initiative performed by Ontario boys and girls between the ages of six and eighteen", said Mr.. Wenge r. The program was of- ficially alunched at the OWNA annual convention in Toronto. The competition will run from mid-March to December 1,1981, and will be open to all youths who, during that period, have performed acts of physical heroism, overcome disabling physical or psychological handicaps, made a meaningful contribution to personal family well-being, or have been involved in some worthwhile community service endeavour. Nominations to the Junior Citizen of the Year Award will be submitted by Ontario residents through the two hundred and seventeen member papers of OWNA. Nomination forms are available at aril community newspaper offices, as well as CP Air ticket sales outlets, and all elementary and secondary schools throughout the province. In addition, nomination forms will be published periodically in the com- munity press. At the end of the year, all nominations will be carefully assessed and fifteen of the most outstanding nominees as well as two groups, from two to as many as an entire classroom, will be selected to receive awards. The awards, consisting of a framed citation certificate outling the ..individual's or group's accomplishment, a savings bond, a Junior Citizen of the Year pin, and a family portrait with the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will be presented at the OWNA convention in the spring of 1982. The guest of honour at this year's OWNA convention was the province's Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable John B. Aird. In his address to the delegates the Lieutenant Governor said, "I think this is a very good program that you have instituted. It's important to have these awards for what normally would go unrecognized in this great province. "It's important that there is a broad participation in the various communities and, yes I do, as Lieutenant Goverri`or of this province and in this great and won- drous land - I do add my name with great satisfaction to this program. And next year when the time comes to present these awards, I'll be there." In closing, he praised OWNA and CP Air for their dedication to the youth of Ontario. But thr real truth is that the success of the program will come from the communities themselves. In his remarks on CP Air's participation in the program, E.W. Ogden, Vice - President, Pastern Canada, CP Air, said, "Our children are our present and our future. They gain respon- sibility and achieve success at an earlier age seemingly every generation. Acknowledging their achievements hand-in-hand with each of the Ontario weeklies is an opportuhity we at CP Air look upon with a great deal of pride." Mr. Ogden added that this is the largest community project ever undertaken by CP Air in Ontario. CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, MARCH 28,1981 -PAGE 5 Narcissus Stems & Pieces ushrooms ., 10 fl. oz.
